Ricochet is the best place on the internet to discuss the issues of the day, either through commenting on posts or writing your own for our active and dynamic community in a fully moderated environment. In addition, the Ricochet Audio Network offers over 50 original podcasts with new episodes released every day.
We’ve got three compelling martinis to help you ease back into that first day back at work or school. Join Jim and Greg as they applaud comedian Ricky Gervais for hammering Hollywood for its hypocrisy and self-importance at the Golden Globe Awards Sunday evening on topics ranging from Harvey Weinstein to Jeffrey Epstein to Chinese sweat shops. Jim also urges President Trump to stop threatening to strike cultural sites in Iran because military targets make much more sense and discussing cultural sites could turn other nations against us. And they cringe as the video of Julian Castro endorsing Elizabeth Warren comes across as inauthentic, with Castro coming to Warren’s house, telling Warren how wonderful she is, and Warren agreeing with him.

Sometimes I get so tired of Jim Geraghty … Wait, didn’t I just say that a few days ago?
Can’t he wait until Donald Trump actually bombs some “cultural sites” before he attacks him? (N.B.: Islamic radicals, especially the Wahhabis in Saudi Arabia, routinely destroy their own cultural sites and relics.)
The smart move, Trump’s move, is to keep the Iranians guessing.
The dumb move, Jim Geraghty’s move, is to give them reassurance.
Yep, Jim. There you go again. But as with Trump being Trump, it’s baked in the cake by now. Just keep the obligatory rants short. Thank you.
Gervais’ effort was fun to watch.
Trump did something good. Let’s trash him on TML because we disliked his tweet phrasing.
The person who wraps up plot changes etc in a TV show or movie, is sometimes referred to as Basil Exposition.
He is played by Michael York in the Austin Powers movies.
Trump never seems to be able to take two steps forward without taking one step back with his fat unthinking impulsive mouth. Nothing wrong with pointing out this flaw.
Jim’s criticism was respectful and balanced, and he agreed overall with Trump’s recent actions. But for too many folks around here nothing but 110% blind support of his every act and aspect will satisfy.
That’s not really it, Mr. D. It’s more the, “I have been wrong so many times before, but I am going to reflexively act as I did every other time despite the fact that my predictions on Trump never come true.” If Jim were right in his criticisms, if things really went the way he’s moaning they will, okay. But it’s almost like Trump understands the people he’s dealing with better than Jim does.
Even if Trump didn’t read a lot about them first. Or consult with “experts” or whatever.
Yes, that’s where the name caught on from. Of course lots of shows/movies have such a character, even before that “obvious” name came up. It’s like, there were a lot of “Mary Sues” even before that name got attached to the type of character because of one particularly obvious story/example.
I could just not care less that Trump mentioned “cultural” sites on his target list. Anything to keep the Iranians off-balance is fine with me. I consider the World Trade Center a “cultural site.” It wasn’t spared regardless. We destroyed the Monte Cassino monastery in 1944. Do I wish we hadn’t? Of course. Sometimes the cost of facing threats is very high.
As illustrated in other comments, President Trump has a strong base that will support anything he does. But he keeps saying asinine things that repel anyone who is not already in that strong base. This is why, despite a strong economy, he is not a clear favorite for reelection.
What act? Please tell me which cultural site he had the military bomb?
My point was, in this case, Geraghty was foolishly attacking Trump for saying something smart.
If the Iranians try to avenge the world’s greatest terrorist since Bin Laden, Trump will hit them … anywhere.
It’s not enough for the Iranian military to batten down the hatches, preposition their fire engines, and prepare their emergency services at likely military targets.
Right now the archivist of the Ayatollah Khomeini manuscript collection is desperately considering having the priceless documents shipped to a cave for safety. Similarly, librarians, museum curators, etc.
Will Trump really hit any targets like that?
That depends on what the Iranians do.
Maybe some people care more about what he DOES than what he SAYS? As I read posted elsewhere, Trump is not an intellectual. But so what? The only “output” you get from intellectuals, is words.

If people want to throw away a booming economy, record-low unemployment, etc, because “Trump says asinine things,” well, they deserve what they get.
