Ricochet is the best place on the internet to discuss the issues of the day, either through commenting on posts or writing your own for our active and dynamic community in a fully moderated environment. In addition, the Ricochet Audio Network offers over 50 original podcasts with new episodes released every day.
Join Jim and Greg as they celebrate courts in Wisconsin and Oregon siding with freedom over heavy-handed governors, although Oregon Supreme Court just overruled the lower court and sided with the governor. They’re also exasperated as President Trump takes hydroxychloroquine, despite testing negative for coronavirus, in the latest salvo in this bizarre battle over whether the drug helps treat COVID-19. They also hammer House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for making the fight even more juvenile. And they respond to a liberal opinion writer in the New York Times pathetically changing what they really meant by #BelieveWomen so it doesn’t apply to Joe Biden and Tara Reade.

“I may be fat, but you’re ugly. I can lose weight.”
I’m just a bit uncomfortable hearing Jim and Greg read that commercial, and it isn’t because of my skivvies.
And let’s not forget “Beauty may be only skin deep, but ugly goes to the bone.”
That could go both ways in that fight.
Remember, Jim Geraghty is always wrong.
“But, sir, you have a wife and three daughters. If one of them were gravely ill with Covid-19, would you recommend them trying hydroxychloroquine?” [Eric] Bolling asked.
[Dr. Anthony] Fauci replied, “Well, my daughters are adults. What I would do is I would tell them to make their own decision myself. Myself, personally, if I were infected, I would want to go into a clinical trial.”
“I would want to do it under the auspices of a clinical trial, a well-controlled clinical trial. With regard to my family, they’re all adults. They would make their own decision based on a discussion between them and their physician and a weighing of the risk-benefit. I think everybody has a different viewpoint and you’ve got to respect the individual viewpoints of people,” Fauci continued. “That’s the reason why I do not criticize people who, together with their physician, make a decision that they may want to try something.”

Remember, Jim Geraghty is always wrong. Part 2: The Democrats Strike Back.
@22:57 — Jim on why the Republicans should practice unilateral disarmament on the Joe Biden and other Democratic sex scandals:
“I was going to say, fighting fire with fire is usually meant as a way to get the other side to stop using fire. If you fight fire with fire, and they never learn the lesson, do you want to continue using fire? Or have you just normalized fire? At that point, Greg, some men just want to see the world burn.”
So the alternative to “normaliz[ing] fire” by both sides Jim prefers is normalizing Democratic use of fire without fear of Republican retaliation.
“At least then, when Leftism triumphs, as we go down in flames, we can congratulate ourselves on our moral superiority!” I imagine him saying.
But there are many people who will be turned off by the Democratic use of fire. Over the long haul if one side uses “fire” and the other side remains calm and rational at least some people will come to our side. If both sides use fire people will shrug and say, “That’s just normal politics for both sides.” Of course in our highly polarized state today “middle of the roaders” are relatively few. So remaining calm and rational is not, by itself, enough. We also have to think about the underlying causes that make us polarized and deal with them. Actually the “underlying causes” are not hard to discern. I intend to post about them sometime in the near future.
Jim Geraghty might want to cast his net a little wider for his medicine & biology knowledge. Or at least give a disclaimer and shorten his pontificating.
Hydroxychloroquine is a zinc ionophore, and zinc may inhibit early steps of coronavirus infections. Thus there is biologic plausibility to using it to prevent infection with covid-19 (as well as treat early stages of infection), and it is my understanding there are studies underway using healthcare workers to see if hydroxychloroquine can reduce infection rates.
medcram.com, or their videos on youtube, seem to be a good source of information, though it helps to have a good grounding in biology. Interestingly, several of their youtube videos have been taken down by the youtube censors, so better to go to the medcram.com site and make a free account.
Even in the unlikely chance that your wishful predictions are right, what will be left of the Constitution “over the long-haul”?
That George W. Bush refused to fight back against a sea of calumnies did not win him any popularity. Instead, his refusal to fight back was treated as a tacit admission of guilt. And helped the Democrats win the supermajorities they needed to pass Obamacare.
The “underlying causes that make us polarized” are mostly that the Democratic Party absolutely needs polarization. Divide and conquer is one of Saul Alinsky’s “rules for radicals”.
For example, they need blacks to go on voting Democratic even though the Democrats constantly screw them over, in particular by providing poor educations for their children. However the Democrats can’t fix that, because the teachers’ unions won’t let them. So to scare blacks into voting Democratic anyway, they have no choice but to do everything they can to represent Republicans as racists.
Similarly, there was a recent article in the Claremont Review of Books about how Democrats and the Left created the category of “Hispanic”, precisely to create more division that they could exploit for political gain. Before that, Hispanics were just whites with sun tans.
I believe I read elsewhere that Dr Fauci favors a “clinical trial” where hydroxychloroquine is being tested WITHOUT zinc, perhaps because he already knows it will fail.
Jim said over and over again that the President’s use of Hydroxychloroquine was “frustrating” to him. But that word Frustrate means: “to prevent (a plan or attempted action) from progressing, succeeding, or being fulfilled.” What plan or action, we should ask, of Jim’s is the President preventing from succeeding by using this drug?
Also, Jim’s criteria for using it seem to be entirely met by the President – he is an adult taking it under the direct care of a physician, who is balancing benefits and risks. In fact, initiating the use of nearly any medical drug or procedure is a process of balancing benefits and risks. (Ever read the fine print on a drug or the medical consent form?) Sounds like Trump is setting a reasonable example – ‘consult your doctor to see if this is right for you’. So why the frustration?
One advantage that Republicans have in this regard is in the approach – they can always simply say “Why don’t you hold yourselves to the standard you set with Kavanaugh?” And keep reminding the votes of that standard, and how hypocritical they are to not apply it. That is VERY different than the Democrat playbook of encouraging false allegations, lying about the evidence, and presuming guilt. We don’t need to stoop that low…
