Kelly and MK discuss Kelly’s jump into the deep end of farm-to-table living off her own farm. Her challenge to live off the fruits of her labor and her land (documented @realbestlife on all social media!) for an entire year began Aug 1, and there has been fun and pain and great recipes and cute animal videos already!     I grew up on a dairy farm where we produced most of our own food. This was in a high altitude in Wyoming, so we had to get fruit from somewhere else, which my mother canned. But I was struck by your butter-making story! Several summers in a row we had to churn our own butter because my mother said that the butter we got from the creamery where we sold our milk had a funny taste in the summers. It was because other farmers did not eradicate a certain weed from their pastures, and my dad did get rid of it. Churning butter is fun…a couple of times. After that–we’d try and hide when we saw her get out that big churning bottle. Blah…So funny! Good luck on your quest!! Sounds like you’re a very creative person!

    I most appreciated @kellymaher ‘s comment that she spends about two hours a day on her homegrown-only food. There are various places I have noted conceptually how much more time we have today because of good market systems, mechanization, and chemistry, but have rarely thought about it specifically in connection with the food I eat. Somewhat related is the thoughts her concern about rationing certain foods and supplies brought up, since I’m so used to being able to get almost anything I want almost any time I want from any of several supermarkets within a few miles of my house. 

    Although I am a 64 year old grandfather, I vividly remember our children (our son in particular) grabbing both sides of his mother’s (my wife’s) face to get her attention. :-)

    When I was a kid we had a really big vegetable garden. I really hated weeding.

    Kelly, what was the name of your online journal? It think it was something like “Kelly is still alive.” I can’t find it.

    Anyway, I just want to say maybe you should monetize your endeavor for charity. I don’t know what your favorite charity is, or if you are still associated with Compass Colorado, but you could seek donation pledges for every month you stay on your “Living off the land” experiment.
