Predictions: Top Ten Stories of 2016

Inspired by the last moments of this week’s Ricochet Podcast, I offer you my predictions for the Top Ten News Stories of 2016.

  1. US stock market crash. People will talk about it being the 1930s again.
  2. Hillary Clinton drops out of the race “for health reasons.”
  3. Electorate in UK votes to leave the European Union.
  4. Terrorist attack by jihadists at the Mall of America or a similar gun-free zone.
  5. Collapse of the Euro and the beginning of the break-up of the Eurozone into two zones.
  6. Republicans sweep White House, House of Representatives, and Senate.
  7. Trump leaves race after SEC Primary.
  8. Economic collapse in China as its centralized and managed economy implodes.
  9. Obama’s Imperial (and anti-American) Presidency becomes more so.
  10. Obama Administration’s Syrian refugee policy fails and poisons the Democrats electoral prospects.

Obviously, I’m not going to bet that all will occur, but I believe certain trends are going to result in events of this sort in 2016. It’s likely to be an annus horribilis for America and the Western world, with a few exceptions.

Comment, criticize and propose your own lists, as you wish.

Perhaps it would be appropriate to find out what ESH6 is before criticizing the comments.

It could be an honest disclosure.

If you prefer I can read your BS posts and trade against you like clubbing a baby seal, but that gets tiresome.

Next time do some homework before you turn into a condescending.

EThompson:FYI, ESH6 is a stock analysis report that Brent mentioned.

Certainly everybody is entitled to an opinion regardless of their participation; however, I’d hesitate to comment vehemently on a topic about which I only read. You gotta be in the game to understand the playbooks.

For instance, when the Patriots lost to Denver and Philadelphia, who was I to question Bill Belichick’s decisions?

No, it isn’t, but don’t let facts or a PM get in the way of your narrative.

    My wild guesses;

    1.  EMP attack on West Coast or East Coast.  Or Separate attacks on Both.
    2. If prediction 1 pans out,   US Financial system ( as well as other systems) in dire shape.
    3. If no EMP attack,  or major confrontations with Russians or China,  markets go sideways.  +/-  3% for 2016.   I am a fairly typical  401K investor.

    E. Kent Golding: EMP attack on West Coast or East Coast. Or Separate attacks on Both.

I hate to admit it, but this could actually happen. Also, I worry that someone will start a real Middle East war (outside of Syria) with Israel.

I am predicting Hillary vs Trump in the general election and the lowest voter turnout (as a percentage of eligible voters) in history if there are no significant third party candidates. (Could be fascinating if you had both left and right third party runs — 1860 redux, with Buchanan (Obama) in the White House.)

TempTime:I like the list — It’s exciting: #2. Scary: #9, #1, and … well, OK, just everything else. But, Could you please work a just little longer/thoughtfully and predict at least one good news/hopeful Story for 2016? Thanks. <big smile>

#3 would be a good news story, I believe. Not everyone would see it that way and granted it would probably take some bad news out of Europe to make it happen. And there could be negative immediate effects. But Great Britain reasserting its sovereignty and pulling out of the EU project would be a very good thing.

    Could happen, too.

Let’s just both agree to ignore one another going forward particularly because I don’t give a rat’s a** what you think. I’ll match my portfolio against yours any day but I don’t have the time to waste. I have donuts to make and serious investments to protect.

Okay, look. At this festive time of the year it seems fitting that we keep our egos in check, avoid pointless interpersonal attacks, and focus on peace to men and women, even if we doubt their good will. This will make things so much more enjoyable for the other readers who would prefer that they needn’t head to the bomb shelter.

    Ok.

In the spirit of the season, I’d like to mention the members that have made my Ricochet experience particularly interesting and thus rewarding (in no particular order):

Jennifer, Colleen, Charlotte, MLR, MLH, Jules, Pencilvania, Kay, Red, Indaba, JofE, Arahant, Percival, David Sussman, Dime, Doc, Doug, Annefy and that rascal David Deeble.

    Thank you all!

    Yeah, me neither.

I think Barack Obama will abide by that tradition just as much as Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, and Algore have.

Oh look, another one-sided tradition that only Republican seem to observe any more.

Honest question for anybody that knows – Herbert Hoover lived into the  Johnson Administration and Truman was alive well into Nixon’s tenure. Did either speak about their successors the way Carter and Clinton have spoken of theirs?

I was watching politics in the 1960’s rather intently, even though I was rather young. As I recall, neither Hoover nor Truman actively participated in political discussions. Hoover’s big contribution to political discourse was the Hoover Institution which is located on the campus of Stanford University. Truman lived a quiet life, although when he was in office (before my time) he was viciously partisan.

EThompson:BTW, first lesson to be learned about investing- never, ever listen to a single thing the media has to say.

Me, I’m taking Jonah Goldberg’s advice and investing in precious metals. I’ve set a room aside in my homemade fuhrerbunker so I can guard them jealously as I wait out the apocalypse above. After y’all have run out of shoe leather to eat, I’ll still be waiting for the radiation levels to taper off while I chow down MRE’s and listen to Ricochet archives.

EThompson: Are you going to see the new movie (The Big Short)?

Yes, eventually. I liked the book. After reading the Barron’s review of the movie I won’t be rushing to the theater. WSJ rated it among the year’s best, although their front runner for Best Picture is still Spotlight.

In 2009 CNBC ran a David Faber documentary miniseries, House of Cards, about the financial crisis. Segments called The Buyers profiled individuals with risky mortgages. You just don’t see that very often. (And try finding that House of Cards — I can’t!)

There’s plenty of blame to go around for the credit collapse, of course. And it’s tough to sell movies where a down-on-his-luck “little guy” is held morally culpable. But unless our culture comes to terms with the good intentions behind disastrous policy outcomes, we’ll forever see revisionist history where greedy rich guys get all the blame.
