Desert Island Movies

shutterstock_134373668On the most recent GLoP podcast, the crew discussed “desert island” movies. That is, the five movies you would want with you on a desert island to watch for the rest of your life.

Now the guys named some incredible movies — among them, The Godfather, Singin’ in the RainThe Best Years of Our Lives, A Face in the Crowd, Groundhog Day, and Casablanca — but I don’t think you would pick those movies to watch over and over and over again. I think they would get old. Here are mine in no particular order:

  1. Zombieland (funny and highly re-watchable)
  2. Scott Pilgrim vs the World (see above)
  3. The Godfather Part 2 – An amazing and highly re-watchable movie
  4. The Incredibles – Best Pixar movie
  5. The Ten Commandments – How can you not?

What is on your list?

    Randy Webster:Buckaroo Banzai

    Serenity

    Casablanca

    The Princess Bride

    Willow

The first reference to BB I’ve seen!  I’ve seen this more than any other movie.  Totally rewatchable.

Mystery Men would be another very rewatchable.  And might provide good amateur superhero skills for the island.

Okay, I’m just going to say this: As someone who loved Firefly, I thought Serenity was a trainwreck. Besides ruining the Reavers and being way too dependent on one-liners, the ultimate reveal is that River is, basically, a slayer? Lame.

I sort of liked the “River beats up everyone” clips.  And in that scene where the soldiers break down the wall after Mal has done his thing, that little knife movement is one of the most menacing things I’ve ever seen.

Oh, don’t get me wrong, those sequences were really cool and Summer Glau is an incredible athlete.  It’s just… we had been promised that she could kill people with her brain. That was waaaay cooler than being absurdly good at martial arts.

In a sense, she is killing them with her brain.  A bit of precognizance would be a wonderful thing in a fight.  No one could be that good at fighting without her brain.
