Desert Island Movies

shutterstock_134373668On the most recent GLoP podcast, the crew discussed “desert island” movies. That is, the five movies you would want with you on a desert island to watch for the rest of your life.

Now the guys named some incredible movies — among them, The Godfather, Singin’ in the RainThe Best Years of Our Lives, A Face in the Crowd, Groundhog Day, and Casablanca — but I don’t think you would pick those movies to watch over and over and over again. I think they would get old. Here are mine in no particular order:

  1. Zombieland (funny and highly re-watchable)
  2. Scott Pilgrim vs the World (see above)
  3. The Godfather Part 2 – An amazing and highly re-watchable movie
  4. The Incredibles – Best Pixar movie
  5. The Ten Commandments – How can you not?

What is on your list?

    If I were truly on a Desert Island, Groundhog Day would be my number 1 choice for reasons both obvious and non-obvious.

    My top 10 list favorite movies prepared for a discussion on another site where favorite was defined as are movies that you can watch many many times over and still enjoy and hopefully catch stuff you didn’t see before, which seems to work well with the desert island theme.

    1)Raising Arizona

    2)Pulp Fiction

    3)This is Spinal Tap

    4)Animal House

    5)Caddyshack

    6)The Matrix

    7)Pink Floyd The Wall

    8)Stripes

    9)Austin Powers

    The Great Escape;

    The Unbearable Lightness of Being;

    The Last Remake of Beau Geste;

    The Power and the Glory with Lawrence Olivier.

    You don’t need a big screen.  The movies will be on your iPad.

    1. Casablanca (because it’s that good);
    2. O, Brother, Where Art Thou? (sheer entertainment value);
    3. A Room With A View (gorgeous, hilarious, and incredibly re-watchable);
    4. A Man For All Seasons (one of the best scripts ever);
    5. Much Ado About Nothing (Branagh’s best film and a charmer).

    I’d like to add Double Indemnity.  I used to just play it in the background because of how the characters spoke.

    Honestly, I think I’d give it a vote as the sexiest movie ever. Certainly among the top five.

    Star Wars: Episodes IV-VI (Empire for those demanding it be only one)

    The Lord of the Rings & Hobbit Trilogy (Not narrowing this down, it’s one long movie. I’m assuming Battle of Five Armies will be good)

    The Incredibles

    Groundhog Day

    The Fountain

    Honorable Mentions:

    The Dish (Sam Neill, Patrick Warburton. Australian movie about the Apollo 11 landing and the radio dish that transmitted the video signal of the first moonwalk.)

    Joe Versus the Volcano

    Open Range
