Sorry, Dems. Trump Isn’t Going to Save You

“Headwinds.” That’s a word you never hear when a Republican is in the White House. If anything goes wrong, from a stock market dip to your teen getting mono, it’s the malevolent intent of the creepy GOPer drooling on the Resolute Desk. But when a Democrat’s in office, the press praises Our Noble Hero for facing down those dastardly headwinds. Record inflation, an overrun border, or a murderous flight from Kabul — or all three! —  President Biden, Obama, et al., didn’t cause the problems. They’re passive observers responding to completely random circumstances.

Politico resurrected this term of art from their 2009-2016 archives and is now applying it to Slow Joe:

President Joe Biden and fellow Democrats have struggled to overcome historical headwinds and worrisome economic trends in the lead-up to the midterms.

So aides are scheming up something else: Turning the campaign into a contrast with Donald Trump and the Republicans.

President Joe Biden and his team are hoping to spend the spring and summer months drawing sharp distinctions with Republicans, one in particular. They still plan to push forth revived pieces of stalled agenda. But they’re also eagerly awaiting potentially explosive findings from the Jan. 6 select committee and hope those discoveries can inflame a battle brewing within the GOP over former Trump’s legacy and power.

That worked out great for Gov. Terry McAuliffe; might as well take it national.

Politico admits that Biden’s previous efforts to “reframe the conversation” have failed, but blamed that on being “overtaken by outside forces.” Poor Joe; always the victim. Who would have thought spending the country $30T into the red, scuttling oil production, and promising to tear down the wall would have Totally Obvious Consequences? Those outside forces are sneaky that way.

Biden aides have been delighted to watch growing division within the GOP, as House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has fended off bitterness within the ranks after a series of revelations about his critical words for Trump and right-wing caucus members after the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. Additionally, there is growing hope that the House committee investigating the insurrection may produce damaging findings against Trump and other key Republicans. The committee plans to begin holding prime-time hearings this June.

Biden advisers have also tried to game out this week the possibility of one particular October surprise. Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter raised the chance that Trump could be reinstated to the social media platform, where he had more than 80 million followers before being banned in the wake of the Jan. 6 riot. Musk has said he would allow Trump to return, and while the ex-president has claimed he doesn’t want back on, the White House does not believe him.

About 20 percent of Americans are on Twitter. Maybe 25 percent have heard of Elon Musk. And Kevin McCarthy has, what, 5 percent name recognition? The average voters aren’t always-online Beltway wonks. They’re too busy working extra hours so they can pay their skyrocketing gas and grocery bills.

Talking about Trump or Jan. 6 is talking about history. Successful campaigns talk about the present and the future. They do not care about Twitter governance. They do not care about Kevin Freaking McCarthy.

They care about the economy. Not “messaging about the economy” — the economy. Any second the Democrats waste on any other issue is a second wasted.

I hope that the GOP is successful this cycle. But if we are not, I would lay the blame on the President who lost the House, the Senate and the Presidency all in one term, for the first time since Herbert Hoover did some 88 years ago. JDT’s demand that candidates repeat the Trump Big Lie is a kiss of death. The best thing that could happen to the GOP is for Trump to get laryngitis and shut up.

Oddly I would blame those that claim to be GOP but vote Democrat.

I don’t so much occasionally vote Democratic, as I reliably vote Anti-Trump. For example Trump has endorsed Kari Lake for Arizona Governor. If she is nominated, I’ll vote for the Democrat. But if Karrin Taylor Robson is nominated, I will happily vote for her as I am a Republican. The same applies for Secretary of State and U.S. Senate races.

The Mark of Trump is the Mark of Cain.

I don’t know these people so to an extent I have to differ to your knowledge of the candidates. Are the policy and/or cultural positions of the two candidates radically different?

I guess what I am getting at is would you ignore a candidate that you found to be significantly more in line with your own thinking on the issues ( a superior candidate) and vote for an inferior choice just because of a Trump indorsement?

Kari Lake is nuts.  She has gone full MAGA, the Trump Big Lie, all of it.  Karrin Taylor Robson is running far to the right in the primary, but she appears to be a hyper competent candidate who will bring honor to our State.

Trump endorsed four challengers to incumbent Republican Governors in GA, ID, and two other states.  It appears that all four are going to go down to defeat.

The strongest possible candidate for the U.S. Senate in Arizona was two-term governor Doug Ducey.  Since he signed off on Biden’s Arizona victory, Trump has black-balled Ducey.  Just as Trump lost us two Senate seats in Georgia, he may well have cost us a Senate Seat in Arizona.

I fail to differentiate between Rinos, and Dinos. Two sides of the same coin? Otoh, I’d still prefer a Mitt Romney vs AOC. Maybe equivocating, but any vote for a moderate Democrat, still gives a voice to the affiliated progressive lunatics. Imho.

It’s more like Romney versus Manchin.

I would prefer Manchin over Romney, any day. Unfortunately I cannot give any support to the modern Democratic party. There’s virtually zero influence by the ‘moderate’ members. The illiberals will keep hijacking the message, and behavior. We are witnessing exactly what that entails. Ruination of what’s left of our traditional governance.

The GOP may only be slightly better, but there is a looming influx of younger, more conservative voices, and influence. The party that gives the working middle class a fighting chance. Possibly even limiting the woke /  climate change fundamentalism.

One great thing about Manchin is his support for the filibuster.  It has been great watching him shut down the Left in the Democratic Party.  Sinema hasn’t been bad either.

Donald Trump won’t save your favorite RINOS either, Gary.

Would you rather have RINO’s or DINO’s?

DINOs, actually, since they would vote our way.

But they would give control to the Democrats.  A mixed choice.

See to me, Having Proudly Voted for Biden is the Mark of Cain. And you will vote for him again if he runs, despite all he has done.

And you are proud of it.

I will vote for Biden or any other Democrat only if Trump or DJTJ is nominated. If neither Trump nor DJTJ is nominated, I will vote for the Republican Nominee.

You could be in a real quandary, Gary, if the 2024 Republican presidential nominee is someone you like, then the Trump family comes out and endorses him or her.  Do you vote D just to spite Trump, even though you liked the candidate prior to the endorsement?  Trump endorsed McCain and Romney, so it is certainly possible that he could endorse the nominee, even if they weren’t his hand-picked successor.

The J6 BS isn’t getting any traction around here. People are pissed at gas prices, mad about CRT, hate the RINOs, and joke about Biden. Dems are in a pickle. Biden can’t last much longer and Harris will be a joke. Trump will walk back into the office in a landslide. RINOs are toast but just don’t know it.

The beginning of the end. Demo have no guardrails. Like a cancer, they destroy the host. I can predict what they will do. I can’t predict the ratio of liberty vs security in the citizenry. The young better choose wisely. If they want liberty, they will have to earn it. I’m not fighting and dying for them. People don’t respect things they didn’t earn.
