NH Union Leader Endorses Gary Johnson
New Hampshire’s largest and most influential newspaper has endorsed Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson for President. This is the first time in more than a century that the Union Leader is not endorsing the Republican nominee.
In 1972, Union Leader Publisher William Loeb found himself having to recommend either President Richard Nixon or challenger George McGovern.
Loeb’s advice: Hold your nose and vote for Nixon.
At least Loeb had a choice between two capable, if flawed, candidates. Godson of one President and personal friend to another, Loeb would not envy the choice America faces today between a selfish, self-centered, sanctimonious prig and Donald J. Trump.
Voters leaning toward Trump are understandably fed up with the status quo, of which Clinton is a prime example. But they kid themselves if they think Trump isn’t pretty much a part of that status quo as well, or that he is in any way qualified to competently lead this nation.
The man is a liar, a bully, a buffoon. He denigrates any individual or group that displeases him. He has dishonored military veterans and their families, made fun of the physically frail, and changed political views almost as often as he has changed wives.
Americans are being told that we have to choose the lesser of two evils. No, we don’t.
Libertarians Gary Johnson and Bill Weld are on the ballot in all 50 states. Their records (as Republican governors in politically-divided states) speak well of them. They would be worth considering under many circumstances. In today’s dark times, they are a bright light of hope and reason. The Union Leader and Sunday News endorse them.
The Union Leader joins the Richmond Times-Dispatch and the Winston-Salem Journal as the newspapers that have endorsed the all-governor ticket. Earlier in the day, Johnson/Weld officially qualified to be on the presidential ballot in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

To all of the Trumpkins who demand that Conservatives endorse the man who hijacked the Republican Party, please read this editorial. Conservatives are not lemmings. To quote the Dallas Morning News, Trump is no Republican and he is no Conservative. Our country will be at risk if Trump is elected. The Republican Party will be destroyed if Trump is elected.
As goes the Union-Leader, so goes The Telegraph of Nashua. It will be the shot heard ’round the corner at Drucker’s Drug Store in Hooterville.
I’m in. I just don’t have the Herculean energy or mental gymnastic ability required to mount an argument for Donald Trump.
“Low Energy”
Nice to see a newspaper accepting the reality of its irrelevance.
Johnson 2016: A Leppo in Every Pot.
or
Johnson 2016: Pot for All the Leppos.
For God’s sake don’t tell James of England!
I was done with Trump when I Read his plan for the $19.5 trillion national debt: treat it like a slightly over-leveraged condo development. From National Review: “I would borrow, knowing that if the economy crashed, you could make a deal” and “You never have to default because you print the money.” Good luck with that.
How immensely boring. Tell me something I don’t know about the jerk I’m voting for.
Yeah? So?
This is fantastic news. Johnson’s rising prospects will likely cost Hillary votes, putting NH in play for the Republican candidate.
I have to see him next week and I don’t want him in a bad mood!
Everyone is bored of Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton which is why it is so important to keep Gary Johnson out of the top line in polls and out of the debates.
Indeed. The NeverTrumpers are really scraping the bottom of the barrel, now.
Too much of a lightweight to make the bottom of a barrel. No gravitas.
NBC/WSJ/Marist poll, 9/6 ~9/8: Clinton 42, Trump 41, MoE 3.6
Throw Gary Johnson in and Trump wins NH!
I am impressed. From the same people who gave us John McCain and other rock ribbed loyal Republicans, it is good to see they finally relearned the use of the word ‘buffoon’, the official word of the #NeverEvers. It communicates just the right essence of smug with a solid finish of pomposity.
Jon, come on. This stoner? No border Gary? Anyone who wants to come here and work, come on in?
Ok. Give me buffoons for $500, Alex.
Ah, I see now, the “Union Leader” is the name of a paper. Got it. I first read the headline as “NH (Labor) Union Leader Endorses Gary Johnson.”
A labor union leader endorsing a Libertarian would surprise me, but one who was also over 100 years old and had never in his life endorsed a Democrat would be a rare find indeed.
I have to ask; does Gary Johnson cut his own hair?
Ironic that this “truth telling” editorial will likely assist in handing New Hampshire to Trump. Might even help put Trump over 270.
So we can put you down as “Probable Trump Voter”, right?
If Hillary is elected President she will complete the destruction of the Republican party. Trump? if we have Republican majorities in both houses with assertive conservative leadership we can survive at worst and actually see some of the administrative state dismantled, I hope Johnson pulls the youth from Hillary and establishes the libertarian party as something real but conservatives and Republicans need to stick with Trump, we must not elect Hillary.
I have to agree among all the things he said this was the most profoundly ignorant and dangerous. There is not an economist, financial guru, Treasury or Fed official in this or any other country that would not corner him and tell him why he can’t even hint at such nonsense and unless he’s retarded or insane, he’d never say such nonsense again. It showed just how profoundly ignorant he is, but we know he’s ignorant, we know he has progressive instincts, but he isn’t Hillary, he wont have the Democratic party, the press, the unions, academia, hollywood, the government cheering him on as he completes the destruction of the Republic. Hillary will. Sowell’s metaphor holds.
The bigger problem is that unless he’s retarded or insane he never would have said it in the first place.
That’s a possibility, but never exclude ignorance, it’s generally the best explanation. He has not returned to that theme so he must have been pounced upon. That he hasn’t is evidence against insanity, that leaves retarded but he’s probably smarter than the smartest woman in the world he’s running against. I’m not sure that proves anything however.
If it’s ignorance, I don’t want someone that ignorant in the big chair.
