NH Union Leader Endorses Gary Johnson

Gary-Johnsonx-large-1New Hampshire’s largest and most influential newspaper has endorsed Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson for President. This is the first time in more than a century that the Union Leader is not endorsing the Republican nominee.

In 1972, Union Leader Publisher William Loeb found himself having to recommend either President Richard Nixon or challenger George McGovern.

Loeb’s advice: Hold your nose and vote for Nixon.

At least Loeb had a choice between two capable, if flawed, candidates. Godson of one President and personal friend to another, Loeb would not envy the choice America faces today between a selfish, self-centered, sanctimonious prig and Donald J. Trump.

Voters leaning toward Trump are understandably fed up with the status quo, of which Clinton is a prime example. But they kid themselves if they think Trump isn’t pretty much a part of that status quo as well, or that he is in any way qualified to competently lead this nation.

The man is a liar, a bully, a buffoon. He denigrates any individual or group that displeases him. He has dishonored military veterans and their families, made fun of the physically frail, and changed political views almost as often as he has changed wives.

Americans are being told that we have to choose the lesser of two evils. No, we don’t.

Libertarians Gary Johnson and Bill Weld are on the ballot in all 50 states. Their records (as Republican governors in politically-divided states) speak well of them. They would be worth considering under many circumstances. In today’s dark times, they are a bright light of hope and reason. The Union Leader and Sunday News endorse them.

The Union Leader joins the Richmond Times-Dispatch and the Winston-Salem Journal as the newspapers that have endorsed the all-governor ticket. Earlier in the day, Johnson/Weld officially qualified to be on the presidential ballot in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

I will go out on a limb here and predict that neither Hillary Clinton nor Donald Trump will destroy the Nation or the Republic if elected. I refuse to fall for the stale persuasion technique of fear.

Good news for Johnson, I guess, since this will get play in the media.

Or bad news, if he escapes the green room and starts rambling in front of microphones again.

Is it just me or is 2016 the only campaign in history where the less all the candidates make their case the better they look?

What is the rationale for poll questions that leave out Gary Johnson when he will be on every ballot?

I didn’t until two two-term former Republican governors were on the ticket for President and Vice President.

I Walton: That’s a possibility, but never exclude ignorance, it’s generally the best explanation. H

If it’s ignorance, I don’t want someone that ignorant in the big chair.

He can learn.  All presidents start out ignorant about most of the things they will deal with.   Trump’s just worse on most matters, but is he worse than Carter on foreign policy? Nixon on Domestic policy, Obama on everything?   Hillary won’t learn because she already knows everything, she’s just wrong on all of it.    He would have been the last choice of most of us here from my standpoint because he was a progressive as well as ignorant.  I prefer an educable ignoramus to a convinced progressive.  We over estimate the knowledge our candidates bring to  the job and while Kissinger correctly said once you hold a senior position it’s too late to learn,  the things they have to learn are about power and human nature, and how to read people and processes.

Straw man. Why would you call for background checks and visas if you support open borders? https://www.johnsonweld.com/immigration

I would like to know just how many visas there would be and the criteria. Some of Johnson’s rhetoric suggests that a job or proof of ability to support oneself would be required. Immigration has traditionally been a weak issue with libertarians.

I’m not sure he can. I’ve seen no evidence that he can learn.

Heres the thing, I’ll accept that one man can’t know everything. But if I don’t know something, I usually try to keep my yap shut until I learn something.

Trump thinks he knows something and talks. And what he comes up with is horrifying.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch also continues to opine that James Comey has the highest integrity of any government official. This paper, now owned by the Warren Buffet empire, continues to move from center-right to establishment left. The Winston-Salem paper, a historic sibling of the RTD, is on the same journey.

Most wealthy people abandon free markets after they make their bundle.  Cronyism is much easier when you mission is to preserve wealth rather than make it.

Owning the government on a time share basis is a useful strategy.
