What Do You Make of This? Chris Christie Endorses Donald Trump.

Christie-Trump

I have long been suspicious of Chris Christie. In his years as governor, as far as I can tell, he has done nothing for the New Jersey Republican Party, which is as moribund today as it was when he was first elected (if not more so). In 2012, at the moment which counted most, he ostentatiously embraced Barack Obama, and that may have decided what looked a week earlier like a very close race.

So when I see that he has endorsed Donald Trump, I ask myself the only question that seems plausible. What might be in it for Christie? The vice presidential nomination? A court appointment? Membership in the cabinet?

Or is this just revenge? He certainly does not seem to like Marco Rubio, who blasted him and bested him in New Hampshire. My own instinct is that the only time that Chris Christie is eager to see the Republicans win is when he is leading the ticket. Am I being unjust?

I’m sure some serious cash changed hands along with the promise of a cabinet position. However, the joke is on Christy as there will never be a Trump administration.

One does wonder at the way he crashed the burning plane of his campaign into Marco Rubio in his final debate. As the time I thought “What could be more New Jersey than that?” With this report I now find myself thinking… “What could be more New Jersey than that?”

Jersey blowhard endorses New York blowhard. It would be more surprising if it didn’t happen.

Comment number 64 or 65 in BrentB67’s post has Christie’s staff virtually admitting that Christie attacked Rubio to help Trump. I expect Christie is angling to be AG, to run Homeland Security, or less likely, to be appointed to the Supreme Court. After all, he is ambitious, and his political career in liberal NJ is over. He might be an effective AG, unless he mimics Eric Holder.

I have a silly but I believe still useful theory about Christie’s motivations: he’s an ass—–.

I hold this conviction on the following evidence. Here in New Jersey (ok, across the river in New Jersey) the NFC East  rivalry is very strong, with northern jersey people reliably rooting for the Giants, and southern jersey people favoring the Eagles. Eagles vs Giants contains genuine animosity, but nothing near what both fan bases feel for the Cowboys.  People in our area HATE the Cowboys.

Christie who was born, raised, and educated in New Jersey, chose to become a Cowboys fan. Was his Dad from Dallas? Nope. Did his favorite uncle try out for the team at some point? No. He just did it to be contrarian, to rub his friend’s and neighbor’s faces in losses.

So now he endorses Trump. Revenge on Rubio? Maybe. Angling for an appointment? Perhaps. But ultimately it’s just in his nature to be a jerk. This hug cost him more locally than the Obama hug did.

VP or attorney general is my guess. Probably VP, because I’m sure Christie wants to be president. I don’t think he’d settle for a cabinet post, he’d want the assurance of being the presumptive nominee in 2024.

Yeah, I don’t get why people are acting surprised by this. Christie endorsing a more conservative candidate would have been a shock, to me at least.

First, it was 2012 (I know because that storm took out my garage).

And, do we really believe Romney voters switched to Obama because of Christie’s hug?

They’re friends. Trump is also on good terms with Giuliani, who is advising Trump and will probably endorse him, too. Newt Gingrich tweeted the Christie announcement as a “major breakthrough.”

What do all these men have in common? They’re doers.

The purists, theorists, pundits, and defenders of the true faith are aligned against Trump.

I think that there are two motivations. Obviously, a position in the Trump administration would be first, VP, Attorney General, possibly.  The second reason, he is at a political dead end. He has failed as a presidential candidate, and unless he gets a position in a national administration, he will never have a chance to run for the presidency again. His attack on Rubio pretty well closed the door on a possible position in that administration, and, likely, a Cruz administration.

Exactly.  Or as I emailed a friend this morning, “Thin-skinned loudmouth from one side of the Hudson endorses… thin-skinned loudmouth from the other side of the Hudson.”

I fully expect the same conspiracy character assassination theme will apply to every endorsement of any candidate. Christie plays what’s in it for Christie. You really think Haley or Gowdy or Abbott are doing it for the good of humanity?

    Sheesh, folks, they are politicians.

You are right… 2012. Mea culpa, mea culpa, but not, alas, mea maxima culpa.

We do not know that they switched because of the hug. We do know that they switched at about that time, and it got ample publicity.

I don’t think he did it for nothing. Christie will be an effective attack dog and campaigner. He may also help repair some of the damage for Trump that going the 9/11 truther route inflicted on Trump.
