What Do You Make of This? Chris Christie Endorses Donald Trump.

Christie-Trump

I have long been suspicious of Chris Christie. In his years as governor, as far as I can tell, he has done nothing for the New Jersey Republican Party, which is as moribund today as it was when he was first elected (if not more so). In 2012, at the moment which counted most, he ostentatiously embraced Barack Obama, and that may have decided what looked a week earlier like a very close race.

So when I see that he has endorsed Donald Trump, I ask myself the only question that seems plausible. What might be in it for Christie? The vice presidential nomination? A court appointment? Membership in the cabinet?

Or is this just revenge? He certainly does not seem to like Marco Rubio, who blasted him and bested him in New Hampshire. My own instinct is that the only time that Chris Christie is eager to see the Republicans win is when he is leading the ticket. Am I being unjust?

What did Christie ever do to make conservatives think he was on their side, aside from a little union-bashing?

Unless you are also prepared to read John McCain out of the Republican Party, your complaints about Trump’s lack of conservative principles are BOGUS.

That said, I can’t support Trump because he is erratic and has made some extreme statements.

Excuse me for my lack of cynicism, but is it possible Chris Christie is not expecting any personal gain and that he endorsed Trump for the very reasons he gave in his announcement?  I know it comes off as a child-like question, but it’s possible, isn’t it?  Trump and Christie are not exactly polar opposites, so it’s not like Christie endorsed Rand Paul.

Carey J.:Just because Christie endorsed him doesn’t mean Trump is bad.

For sure. Trump is terrible on his own.

Viewing this using Trump logic, why should this matter to either Trump or anyone else? Christie’s a loser who’s only at 5% in the polls and he’s fat to boot.

rosegarden sj dad: The real loser in the Christie announcement is *Kasich*. If Christie is Trump’s VP, Kasich’s strategy of hanging around and being nice to the Donald for a VP slot now looks lost. Nice try, but Kasich just got marooned by the Donald.

Christie is more the AG type than Kasich. I could see Kasich as the VP with a mission to keep congress calm and on board. Much as I dislike Kasich, he does know the place well.

Agree. Two doers and an administrator type. If Trump is the nominee, could we be witnessing a presidential election that is not really Party focused but rather drawing votes by the candidates who are on the ballot. In that case, I can see how Trump has advantages over Clinton. Most here vote Republican because we are of that makeup, many Democrats vote Democrat because that’s what they are. But what we have seen in this Republican primary season makes me think there might be a horde of usual Democrat voters who will be drawn to Trump. I’m not voting for Hillary.

I am impressed as to how easy it is to pull off.  That’s what I get for overrating the Republican electorate.

I think that Meg Whitman got it right.  Per the New York Times, she said:

“Chris Christie’s endorsement of Donald Trump is an astonishing display of political opportunism,” Ms. Whitman, who was a national finance co-chair of the Christie campaign, said in the statement.

“Donald Trump is unfit to be president,” Ms. Whitman said. “He is a dishonest demagogue who plays to our worst fears. Trump would take America on a dangerous journey. Christie knows all that and indicated as much many times publicly. The governor is mistaken if he believes he can now count on my support, and I call on Christie’s donors and supporters to reject the governor and Donald Trump outright. I believe they will. For some of us, principle and country still matter.”

Christie is still angry that he lost New Hampshire and that Rubio ran negative ads against him.  I will never support Christie again after this incredible sell out.
