RMFC Exhibition Match: In Honor of Boss Mongo
Brendan was one of the coolest characters I’ve ever been blessed to know. He was also one of the all-time great Ricochet members. His humor and unique insight into the world around us will be sorely missed. In honor of him I’d like to posit this question: Who is the coolest movie character you wish you could know in real life?
Nothing on the line here. Just for kicks and giggles.

Capt. Daniel Gregg

Excellent choice! An under-appreciated film.
Col. Nicholson (Bridge on the River Kwai).
Gandalf.
Actually, Jesus, from Passion of the Christ. But I already know Him.
I thought that was The Ghost and Mrs. Muir as soon as I saw the picture. Can’t say if I ever saw the movie, but I remember the TV show.
Mr. Bean.
The movie was much better.
Buckaroo Banzai: surgeon, scientist, martial artist, lead singer for the Hong Kong Cavaliers. What more could you want?
It’s a tie. Tony Stark and Minerva McGonagall.
The one in the novels, not the one in Jackass’s films.
I’d like to be Jason Bourne. Intellect, skill, and no baggage.
Mr Kesuke Miyagi

Goose.
Trying to stay within the boundaries of “cool” not role models.
When I was an adolescent it was James Bond (Connery)
I have a special place for Jack Nicholson as RP McMurphy in One Flew Over… but Nicholson is always a “cool” character.
William Holden in Stalag 17…
Clint Eastwood in just about everything..
But Gran Torino and Unforgiven are good
Im realizing that as I’m writing this is they all have a very cynical, jaded, detached view of the world. But isn’t that the definition of cool?
RIP Boss Mongo
It’s a tossup, but both are from the movie Gettysburg – Joshua Chamberlain or John Buford. Both cut from the Boss Mongo mold.
A few come to mind:
George M. Cohan ( Yankee Doodle Dandy )
Rocky Balboa
Yoda
Steve McQueen
Bullet would be a great choice.
Owen (Sam Rockwell) in The Way Way Back.
Quintessential Cool. I forgot about him.
The Great Escape.
Inigo Montoya, of course, but I assume that the Princess Bride exclusion applies, as usual.
So I’ll say Han Solo.
Captain Jack Aubrey from Master and Commander.
Rick.
(Exceptions be damned.)
Anything goes on an exhibition match.
It wasn’t so much the chase scene in Bullitt that appeals to this old guy who is too old for fence jumping contests. This scene does:
If I could have a drink with Boss Mongo and a character from a movie, I think we would both enjoy the company of Capt. Augustus McCrae . . . as long as we are on his side of the bar. RIP Boss.
I approach it as someone who I’d like to go on a roadtrip with. Or, someone I wouldn’t mind staying at my place once in a while. They’ve got to be interesting, fun to be around, and elevate the day somehow.
Snake Plisken…though I heard he was dead.
