RMFC Exhibition Match: In Honor of Boss Mongo
Brendan was one of the coolest characters I’ve ever been blessed to know. He was also one of the all-time great Ricochet members. His humor and unique insight into the world around us will be sorely missed. In honor of him I’d like to posit this question: Who is the coolest movie character you wish you could know in real life?
Nothing on the line here. Just for kicks and giggles.

The ultimate cool. Lord Peter Wimsey.

Ever notice how men are supposed to be cool and women are supposed to be hot?
Me… channeling George Carlin.
“That’s my darling Luke. He grins like a baby but bites like a gator.”
He was called the Cooler King.
I’m voting twice ’cause Boss isn’t here to stop me
The Irishman for sheer cool

Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,I
But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.
Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;
For tho’ from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have cross’d the bar.
Shaft …. John Shaft
Ben the Cow from Barnyard (2006): A rock steady, manly, father…who sounded a lot like Sam Elliott. The epitome of cool. Stood up to evil and risked all in the service of others. Slightly older and “broader” than he used to be, Ben was tragically struck down way too early…he had much, much more to give. The entire barnyard wept at the incredible loss.
That’s udderly ridiculous.
Lots of cool ladies in the movies as well, and although I could easily spend an evening talking with either Edna Mode (The Incredibles), Holly Golightly or Annie Hall, I’ll have to go with Ellen Ripley (Alien series.) I just have too many things I want her to explain. (So maybe it will take two evenings.)
Two competing heads are unbelievably complex. Five is completely out of the question!!
Out west I’m hanging with Reuben J. “Rooster” Cogburn. In the city Nick and Nora Charles. Overseas, Mary Kate Danaher.
Doc Holiday in Tombstone
And for women, Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind
After reading this I changed my mind. Shaft was good but Steve McQueen much cooler. Especially trying to get his cycle over that fence in the Great Escape. Plus the San Fran scenes in a Mustang. Alec McGuinness was good; McQueen was better.
That’s pretty cool.
Seriously, if I were ever to want to discuss anything with any cool fantasy figure, it would be in order:
Connor MacLeod
Alex Murphy (RoboCop)
And just for kicks, the Terminator, the Cyberdyne Systems Model 101 that was sent back from the future.
But my overall favorite would be Mr. Bean, a renaissance man of many talents, diverse sensibilities, and a unique view of the world (and can drink hot water direct from the tea kettle and swirl it around with the instant coffee in his mouth before swallowing — and like it!).
I would include Ellen Ripley (Alien), but she was too serious.
I would include Hancock the superhero, but he doesn’t remember anything.
I think I’d get along pretty well with Sydney Carton from A Tale of Two Cities:
Or, Longfellow Deeds:
But the coolest guy I’d like to hear tell a few dozen stories over a few beers would be Wade Garrett:
He?
I think those aren’t his real teats.
Nicholas Cage was seriously underrated in the cool department. Cameron Poe, from Con Air, 1997. Admit it, this scene puts hair on your chest:
Lol.
Let’s see…. Sam Spade, John Shaft, Charles Chan, Jake Gittis…better shift gears….Jim Kirk, Han Solo….too many options, here.
So I’ll settle on Augustus McCrae. Or John Book.
I hope Boss is reading this.
Margaret Tate from The Proposal. You’d have to work like heck to win her heart, but man oh man, it would be worth it! Besides, you can never go wrong with Sandra Bullock . . .
My choice may be a bit unusual: Mr. Chips.
Speaking of thought he was dead…….
Big Jake McCandles.
Also,
G.W. McClintock or
Rooster Cogburn.
I reread the novel yesterday. The link takes you to a digital version.
