Cannot get podcast to play in Windows Media Player after clicking Direct MP3 link.. This has been a problem with several podcasts.

I’d suggest downloading it with iTunes. But that’s its own ball of wax.
Scott, I just tested it here on Windows 7 and I was able to get it to play. This sounds like a security setting. As the MP3 files for podcasts are hosted on a different server from the rest of the site, some anti-phishing software interprets that as malware. It’s not. Try adjusting your security settings and try listening again. If you’re still having trouble, PM me or write us support@ricochet.com and we’ll figure it out.

Yinz made a great podcast this week.
That was fantastic! I love Joe Flaherty. Not only from SCTV, but he is a scene-stealer par-excellence in every movie he’s been in.
As a resident of Edmonton, I’m going to have to try to attend the Die Nasty! at Ft. Edmonton when Joe is there. And Fort Edmonton hasn’t suffered an Indian attack in years, so it should be safe.

Oh, I’d like to put in a little plug for Die Nasty, the improv group that Joe is going to be performing with. They’re one of the best improv groups around, and have won many awards. I believe Joe has worked with them before. One of Die Nasty’s more famous alums is Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Castle), but the entire cast is very good.
If anyone in the Edmonton area wants to attend, here’s a link to the show that Joe Flaherty will be in: Die Nasty: The Full Mountie (heh) August 1-3.

Loved hearing Pittsburgh native, Joe Flaherty, on the podcast. In the late ’70’s I remember Saturday nights watching SCTV first, then SNL, back-to- back. I also remember, after about a year, quietly realizing I was enjoying SCTV more than SNL. Everybody quotes SNL, but the secret code is quoting SCTV. What adds a further subtext of humor to watching old SCTV clips is knowing the guy in charge of inserting the laugh track didn’t get the humor so ended up just throwing in the laugh track in incongruent places. Joe was also great as the Dad in Freaks and Geeks.

In NYC, the original SCTV was on Friday nights, I’m pretty sure. The weird thing is that I didn’t find it especially funny, but just very fresh and unconventional; about as close to one can get to improve that isn’t live.

What a joy to hear Joe Flaherty, one of my favorite all-time comedians, on one of my favorite all-time podcasts. I remember many happy hours watching SCTV while in college and as a previous commenter said, it was by far the superior show to SNL, and we who were fans of SCTV were head-and-shoulders just smarter than our peers. (Better looking, too!)
I hope that when Joe is next on the show (and I say when not if because nothing short of severe illness should prevent this) that James is given an uninterrupted half-hour to chat with this great performer.
My only criticism is that no-one quoted “There’s a rainbow in Toronto” which remains one of my favorite of the old sketches.

I had never heard of SCTV. I claim “I was a kid on foreign military bases.” I should look them up, though. Sound funny -and SNL has never really moved me.

Here’s an ethical–or maybe just an emotional–conundrum. I have tried audio books three times. No wins, 2 losses, 1 draw. Great to hear old SCTV stories and about Toronto which is a terrific city – 4th largest in North America I believe and a great place to live today too.
The comedy Channel plays SCTV all the time so my sons know the skits and characters. Since it was not political, it still has fresh appeal.

Peter, you said you are interested in reading the RS article on the Boston bombers, in particular for insights into their travel back and forth between the US and Russia. I recommend a recent article on point by F. Ajami writing for Bloomberg (available on line). He calls them and others like them “children of the fault lines” who “live on the seam between countries and cultures.” The argument is that they never really leave their country/culture of origin or commit to this country and the Christian culture. Ease of air travel and internet communication are parts of the puzzle.
