I love George's last album, Brainwashed, recorded as he was dying. Lots of beauty on that record.

Dion "The Wanderer" DiMucci:

“It’s puzzling to me because I’m a rock ’n’ roller and rockers believe in truth and freedom. I don’t believe a lot of [rock'n'rollers] know what the two words mean,” says Dion. “I think a lot of them have confused it (freedom) with license — giving you permission to do anything you want without regard to the consequences.”

Dion describes himself politically as “kind of an independent. … I’m liberal with my love but conservative with my thinking.”

Spud O'Chez: When I first met my Southern Belle (now Mrs. O'Chez) she had a slight but noticeable drawl.  It seems to have faded over time, though I don't know if it was being exposed to my Yankee/Chicago ways or the five years we did not live in NC.  It was funny to see the looks on people faces when she talked to them, when we were up north, and they would say "You're not from around here, are you?"  Her drawl would "amplify" if she talked around other drawlers.

Mrs. Hennessey is from Staten Island but she went to school down South and so gets very y'all-y when talking to her college friends. This give me endless amusement.

Wow. Never heard that one, and I've heard a lot of them. I like it.

You seem to be of the mind that that our nation would be well served by involving ourselves in this slaughter. Incredibly poor judgement on your part Mr. Hennessey.

That's an absurd leap. I am of no such mind. This post merely draws contrast between our own leader's milquetoast rhetoric and Mr. Erdogan's flowery declamation.

Maybe when Christie is president we'll hear more of this kind of thing.

This citizenship business is good news for my foreign-born niece and nephew.

KC Mulville: It's good to remember this whenever a Krugman-like apologist for the welfare state argues that in the 1960s, taxes were nominally sky-high, and yet we had unlimited prosperity.

Good point KC. For more on that, see this:

Gentlemen, if you please, this is a private fight. The Marquess of Queensberry rules will be observed.

Re: Boston

I want to take slight issue with Peter's claim, early on, that the Democratic candidates for NYC mayor are the only candidates that matter. This has not been true for 20 years and is not true this year either (although I understand why people have this impression).

This year is looking like a complicated 4-way race between a Democrat (Christine Quinn, Anthony Weiner, and Bill Thompson are the front-runners), Republican former MTA chairman Joe Lhota (although there are other significant candidates running for the GOP nomination), former Bronx Borough President  Adolfo Carrion (a Dem who wanted to run in the GOP primary, but will be on the ballot as the Independence Party candidate and could peel off some votes from the Dem), and Public Advocate Bill DeBlasio (a liberal Dem who will likely run on the Working Families Party line and peel off a bunch of votes from the Dem nominee).

So, you see, it is rather up in the air. Moreover, the lefty candidates have, with the help of the NYTimes, been competing with each other for months to out-smear Ray Kelly and the NYPD -- I'd be very surprised if Boston changed that.

The gun went off two or three time "accidentally" in the hallway causing everyone to duck and cover.

Simon -- it's the latter. "They."

The point is: All of us -- me, you, all of us -- could end  up old, penniless, and unable to care for ourselves. The singling out of the obese, smokers, the disabled--and a host of other groups--for the special financial burden they impose on society is an increasingly common and highly troubling development. At least it is to me.

Mollie Hemingway has done more than anyone to hold the media to account for this shameful dereliction. It's been beautiful and inspiring to watch her make them squirm. Keep it up, Mollie. We are with you 100,000 percent.

Terry: Virgil Trucks was the uncle of Butch Trucks one of the founding members of the Allman Brothers Band.  He was the great uncle of one of the greatest guitar players on the planet today-- Derek Trucks.

How could THAT have been left out??!!??
