Ricochet is the best place on the internet to discuss the issues of the day, either through commenting on posts or writing your own for our active and dynamic community in a fully moderated environment. In addition, the Ricochet Audio Network offers over 50 original podcasts with new episodes released every day.
This week, Jon Gabriel captains the good ship Ricochet in place of James Lileks and podcast amigo Andrew Klavan is in the Long Chair® this week. Our guests are Charles C.W. Cooke, the foremost authority on firearms (also roller coasters, but that’s for another show). Then, TV’s and noted Trump supporter Rob Long stops by to plug his new book Bigly: Donald Trump in Verse. Also, Andrew talks about his new podcast/novelization Another Kingdom, and a fond farewell to Tom Petty. Later, dude.
Music from this week’s episode: Alright For Now by Tom Petty
Don’t do me like that, @ejhill

That artwork is truly disturbing, @ejhill .
I was confused. When Yeti asked for a Petty themed photoshop I didn’t know how I was going to get 6 guys into the NASCAR 43 car.
Nice Artwork – is Ricochet creating a remake of “This is Spinal Tap”.
It will be a while before I have time to listen to the podcast, but I wanted to comment on the artwork. Once again, EJ, great job!
Yes, since I was 9 – 12 years old when we lived on the east coast of Florida in the late-1960’s, when someone mentions the name “Petty,” I too think of a blue Plymouth bearing # 43.
But, Peter Robinson with jeans and long curly hair is quite the image makeover! And Klavan with hair!
Rob, you nihilist enabler you!
I guess the prohibition of the use of the term Trumpkin in the interests of civil conversation does not apply to podcasts. Or maybe it just doesn’t apply to @exjon.
Not so much.
Andrew Klavan referenced an article by Charles Cooke on gun control – can you provide a link please.
That looks like an actual photo of Charlie.
I believe it’s this one:

Good show, Gents. Good music selection at the end, too. And Jon, you for got the “in.” There’s a big difference between famous and infamous. (And I should know.)
Also, you should have read one of the poems.
Paraphrase by Andrew Klavan @andrewklavan of Molly Hemingway.
I definitely want more on what happened at the Mandalay…camera surveillance, the law enforcement aspects of this horrific event.
@peterrobinson mentioned this aspect
Mollie was actually with Dave Carter on Radio Deplorable saying similar things:

Gentlemen,
I always enjoy hearing Mr. Cooke’s perspective on the Second Amendment. His is among the most sensible voices on the subject.
But this Rob Long character… I don’t know where you found him, but I hope you’re able to get him back. I wouldn’t mind hearing him on Ricochet occasionally.
When he isn’t busy at his day job, I mean.
H.
Beautiful song choice. I had not heard that one.
I had not either. Petty’s daughter posted it on Instagram the night he passed away.
What a bombshell to find out, via the New Yorker, of all things, that @roblong is in fact a crypto-Bannonite Trumpist True Believer™, normalitizingining Donald Trump. I thought the Rino Squish carapace would be too gelatinous to serve as a Trojan horse, but there it is. Wow. Well played, Rob, well played.
Thanks for not asking @peterrobinson to name a favorite Tom Petty album and embarrassing everyone. (Thanks for the tribute, @exjon , he’s one of the best.)
I was disappointed that the opening audio sequence has three clips from Trump, and only one clip from the Greatest President of the Twentith Centrury, Ronald Reagan. How about three clips from Reagan, and one clip each from Trump, Romney, McCain and Bush?
How about just one clip from Calvin Coolidge, instead? We can all ask for stuff, @garyrobbins, but what they are doing is being current and relevant. Yes, Ronald Reagan was a good PotUS, especially standing head and shoulders above his generation and ours. I think that he would agree that Silent Cal was even better. But how far do we take it? Shall we require @blueyeti to invent a time machine so he can go back and record Geo. Washington’s speeches? Or maybe we can let them use their best judgment on what is relevant for the opening audio now? After all, a few years ago, there were no Trump quotes in there. If we wait long enough, they will go the way of the Barack Obama clips.
@jameslileks –who created the open– and I are totally open to replacing the speech clips in the open (we usually do it once a year or so). Suggestions as to what should go in there welcome.
Trump is incredibly divisive and to my mind does not represent me or the conservative movement. Reagan is the great unifying figure in our movement. More Reagan, “Tear Down This Wall” comes to mind immediately. (Thank you again Peter Robinson!) George W.: “You are with us, or against us.” George H.W. Bush: “This will not stand.” And how about Lady Thatcher: “There is No Alternative” or “The Lady’s Not For Turning.” If you include Trump, how about Coker saying that “Trump has not yet demonstrated the stability or competence.”
Also Nixon saying “I am not a crook” and Ford saying “Our great national nightmare is over.”
Thanks for these great suggestions! Won’t have time to put them in for this week’s show, but will make a valiant attempt to get them into next week’s outing.
Hey, @blueyeti, do we have the address to send Bigly to in order to get @roblong to autograph them?
Not yet. Should have it early next week.

The current President has relevance, however frustrating he can be. And he’s said some things that are worth excerpting. (You just have to be careful, because, you know: Donald.) I thought his Warsaw speech was very good; I’m sure there were quotable moments within that.
Having said that, I’m 100% with Gary on both “Tear down this wall!” and “The lady’s not for turning.” (I’m voting Reagan/Thatcher in 2020.)
