Guns N’ Poetry

This week, Jon Gabriel captains the good ship Ricochet in place of James Lileks and podcast amigo Andrew Klavan is in the Long Chair® this week. Our guests are Charles C.W. Cooke, the foremost authority on firearms (also roller coasters, but that’s for another show). Then, TV’s and noted Trump supporter Rob Long stops by to plug his new book Bigly: Donald Trump in Verse. Also, Andrew talks about his new podcast/novelization Another Kingdom, and a fond farewell to Tom Petty. Later, dude.

Music from this week’s episode: Alright For Now by Tom Petty

Don’t do me like that, @ejhill

Beautiful song choice. I had not heard that one.

I had not either. Petty’s daughter posted it on Instagram the night he passed away.

Really?  It’s on Full Moon Fever.

I thought everyone had that album…like Rumours, or Frampton Comes Alive.

Kids these days. Probably doesn’t have a single album of Sinatra, Benny Goodman, or Perry Como.

I don’t have any Perry Como.  I have several Benny Goodman compilations, and the full 1938 Carnegie Hall recording [true story – I once caused a computer monitor to fail after drumming along on my desk to “Sing, Sing, Sing”.]

I also have the Frank Sinatra Reprise Years box set.

    Lots of Glenn  Miller too.

Not really.  This was in the days of tube monitors.  I was banging along with my hands on the desk, pretty hard, the monitor crackled and failed.  Guessing I knocked a connection loose or something.

Now, about my theory that Sing, Sing, Sing is really the first Rock song…

Now, let me share my theory that Sing, Sing, Sing is really the first Rock song…

Sounds like that should be a full conversation of its own.

Mel “The Velvet Fog” Torme is the thinking man’s Perry Como.
