Ricochet is the best place on the internet to discuss the issues of the day, either through commenting on posts or writing your own for our active and dynamic community in a fully moderated environment. In addition, the Ricochet Audio Network offers over 50 original podcasts with new episodes released every day.
We’ve got a new VP candidate, we’ve got Mark Simon (right hand man to Hong Kong freedom fighter Jimmy Lai), we’ve got historian Tevi Troy on political conventions (or the lack of them) and using songs for political rallies, we’ve got a warning on Blazing Saddles and we’ve got a Lileks Post of the Week (courtesy of Ricochet member Sage Wolkenfeld) about the importance of dressing well. That’s a pretty full show. What do you have for us?

The name should fit the person. :-)
On the subject of pronunciation, I heard @jameslileks pronounce indicative as indi-KAY-tive. I’ve always heard it – and said it – as in-DIH-kahtive.
My dictionary has stress on the second syllable, although “indication” has stress on the third.
And I wish @peterrobinson, among others, would stop referring to the Democrat party as the DemocratIC party. Using that name plays into their hands and makes it sound like the Republican party, by comparison, must not believe in democracy.
Yes, but it’s far from the only example where a word pronunciation – or even spelling, as with the just-used pronunciation versus pronounce – changes when a word is modified or extended.
Pronounciate it out loud.
“Inconvenient assertions” would make another fine podcast/”episode” title, if it hasn’t already been used.
I do that all the time, but you can’t get away with it if you are a very public person. It makes them really angry.
Rob piqued my curiosity so I went to the Anderson $ Sheppard online shop and found this at the top of their list of over 300 accessories on offer:
One “Plain Cotten Face Mask” in coral, denim, dark navy, mint, or navy for £18.
I have had the pleasure of being chalked out a few times in British Hong Kong. It is probably not as elegant as London, but the signed glossies on display of diplomats, admirals, and celebrities, all “projecting sobriety and power and competence” were assuring. That is at least until one learns how easy it is to get fake anything in a Chinese economy.
In those good old days I once found I did not have the time to pick up my order after a final adjustment immediately before my departure. My tailor dispelled my stress. He was so connected as to be able to have a military attaché at the US Consulate deliver my purchase to me by US Mail. I’m sure that government office is busy with much more important tasks these days.
@Percival So, you’re FOR Joey and Kammy? OK. De gustibus, etc…
Oh, no. To me, Joe has always been a little slow. If they are timing his appearances so that he’s at his peak game, and this is the result, there isn’t much between him and rock bottom. If he actually does get elected, his own party will punch his ticket faster than you can say “25th Amendment.”
Regarding Rob’s speculation that Iran played a big role in UAE’s decision to reach out to Israel, I think the rise of Turkey is also a major concern. The mideast will evolve as a balance between the Turks, the Arabs, and the Iranian, with Israel and the Qurds each having what influence they can. The Arabs are the weakest of the three, but Israel sits in their corner of the board and has a lot of what they will need going forward to compete. Interests evolve.
Any day now Rob is going to reveal he has changed his name to Roberta and now identifies as the suburban housewife he truly is as evidenced by his political analysis which may be summarized by the phrases “Trump is a disgusting human being” and “if the President would just get off Twitter everyone would like him.” It’s amazing that Rob won’t acknowledge that many people vote for candidates because of what they actually accomplish in office, but then again, that’s his inner female crying to get out. And James really needs to come clean about what a joke the Star Tribune, his employer, is and how it has utterly failed to tell the truth about the virus in our state and to hold our feckless governor and his lackeys accountable for wrecking the economy and perpetuating abuse upon our children by keeping them out of school. Some of us are wage slaves in thrall to the big corporations we work for in order to feed our families, but I get the impression James doesn’t need his job but likes working where he does because it’s nostalgic for him to think back to the days when actual news was reported and pretend that somehow it still happens, but it doesn’t.
And the riots. Or has the Star Tribune been doing a better job of that, than the Oregon and Washington rags have regarding Portland and Seattle?
In 2018 and 2019 I attended Capital Case Defense Seminar.
I can’t describe (without violating the CofC) the vitriol expressed for Kamala Harris by the attending lawyers.
An error on my part. I am an in-DIK-ative guy, most days.
P.S. Akai reel-to-reels had better sound quality than Teac, because of their glass-and-ferrite heads. Also, in the used/vintage market, Teac units are more likely to have been abused and run into the ground.
Great show as always. But I heard something James said about Rush Limbaugh’s theme song that I believe is incorrect. From listening to Rush Limbaugh, I recall he said that Chrissie Hynde was fine with him using her song for his theme song. It was her FANS that tried to get her to disallow its use. She said she would not…and part of the reason was that her parents were fans of the show.
Julia: My understanding is the same, but I don’t listen very often so wasn’t 100% sure.
My memory from reading about it a few years ago is that Chrissie was against allowing him to use the song at first, but then found out her dad was a fan, at which point she relented (in exchange for a charitable donation by Rush to PETA, I believe).
I believe there was also an intermediary (agent or some such) who tried it at one point, and Rush actually stopped using it for a bit. Then Chrissie heard about it and reversed that ship from sailing right quick.
Wow, don’t hold back! Tell us how you really feel.
Re: Tammy Duckworth as VP, is it a good idea to have a double-amputee (and then some: one arm was severely damaged too) “one heartbeat away from the presidency” especially when that heartbeat is Joe Biden’s?
Like Rob, I dont like Trump, unlike Rob I am overjoyed by his policy and not blinded that my preferences are everyone else’s. No one is excited by Biden while Trump has a legion of devoted fans who absolutely love him. Their enthusiasm is incredible. Dont conflate your views with the average voters.
