I think this is a very poor defense of Hasidic schools. It’s mostly just “attack the attacker”. Yes, I agree that the left hates Hasidics, even to the point where they ignore assaults. And the public schools, which are run by the left, are terrible. But to have schools which teach only rudimentary English, and math, and apparently very little in other secular subjects, is also horrible. You did have one example of someone who rose above ignorance, but children should not be kept ignorant on purpose.
There’s an article describing the Satmar Jews in Commentary Magazine, from 1959. This article points out that English is on the curriculum: “In their long school day, the Satmar children are taught English and the other secular subjects demanded by the state until they reach sixteen.”
Because it was about non-Muslim religious people and appeared in the NYT, I had a strong suspicion it was a ridiculous and terribly unfair hit piece when I read it, and the Commentary team not only verified my suspicions, they explained why it was a ridiculous and terribly unfair hit piece. An hour well spent.
