Chaos in Austin: Update
Some updates on the mass shooting in Austin that I reported on earlier. Sadly, one of the victims, a visitor from Michigan, has died. Another woman remains in critical condition.
Two arrests have been made. Oddly enough, the 17-year-old arrested appears to exactly match the “vague” description provided by the police that the UT Football News refused to publish “as it is too vague at this time to be useful in identifying the shooter and such publication could be harmful in perpetuating stereotypes.”
KXAN, a TV station actually more interested in reporting news than in virtue-signaling, published the Chief of Police’s description: “He said the man may be a Black man with a “skinny” build and locs-style hair.” Here’s a photo of the suspect:
News stories indicate that the event was the result of a dispute between two individuals who had engaged in previous violent confrontations. The identity and demographics of the second suspect have not been released as “they” is a juvenile.* And I have a hunch that we all can make a pretty accurate guess as to “their” demographics.
As usual, the anti-gun people chimed in saying that lack of gun control is the cause of this incident. Never overlook the opportunity for a tragedy to advance your political agenda.** It’s pretty easy to counter that by pointing out that both of the suspects were violating laws already on the books. It is already illegal for both of the suspects to possess concealed handguns. The laws don’t mean anything unless you enforce them.
But they don’t want enforcement, either, because the majority of people arrested are going to look something like the photo above. Police in Minnesota recently attempted to make an arrest for a weapons violation; the result was more rioting. But being leftist means you never have to take responsibility for any of your policies.
* Using the proper pronoun makes that sentence look so much better, doesn’t it?
** Though Texas Governor Greg Abbott is not exactly shying away from using the victims to advance his own political agenda.

But it’s Juneteenth.
Or is that tomorrow?
I’m not sure.
Question: Is he as dumb as he looks?
I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. It’s pretty hard to look intelligent in a booking photo. But I think you can see the reason he did a mag dump and managed to hit everything but the intended target.
His left eye must be really fascinating because his right eye keeps staring at it.
Yes, I think we can say yes, but don’t disrespect him.
For sure. He might randomly shoot some other uninvolved people again, if he gets disrespected.
Someone call Kamala so she can bond him out.
You can assume that we your Ricochet friends already know that you know that death is sad.
We Republicans sometimes feel so defensive that we start to talk like Democrats, who have a compulsive need to signal to their comrades that they are not of the deplorables–that they have normal human values.
There is zero reason for two juveniles to be in Austin’s bar district. I heard the two youths were from out-of-town,
but I am not able confirm.I found a news source.
That the shooters are from Killeen is somewhat telling. Killeen and nearby Harker Heights are adjacent to Ft Hood and have a pretty bad reputation for juvenile crime.
These shootings are always sad even if it is possible to become numb to them for various reasons. Prayers to the families. I saw on a twitter thread the person from Michigan was a Wolverine. That’s a darn shame. I don’t know. When I saw the picture of the dude with his graduation gear on in the thread it sorta hit me in a different way than usual.
A dumb question but I was a Navy guy. Why would someone carry a gun who does not know how to aim it to hit his target? My dad’s training me with a .22 was 60 years ago. But we see all the stories of young kids in their living rooms getting a bullet in the head from a gang fight many yards away. Maybe the NRA can sponsor gang shooting range lessons. Might save some innocent lives.
If I were an instructor on that range, I think I’d stay in a bullet-proof booth…
I did some of my ER training in Metroplex Hospital up there. The staff nickname for the place was “Murderplex.”
So I guess the $64 question is how do you keeps guns out of the hands of 16-17 year old idiot felons who don’t know how to shoot without bothering 100 million hunters or responsible citizens who want to protect themselves. Any ideas?
A smackdown by their parents might help, if they had decent parents and if DCS wouldn’t swoop in to forbid it.
It’s been known to happen, but not nearly enough.
Two words: “Stop” and “Frisk”
Did NYC Police try that? How did it work out?
I’ve never lived there, but what I heard and read was that it was very successful, and much of the current increase in crime in NY began after that policy was stopped.
Same info I got. Which is one reason my daughter moved from NYC to Nashville. Much safer now.
“The document says the suspected shooter said “What y’all wanna do? Y’all wanna fight?”
A member of the rival group replied “It’s whatever.” “
”It’s whatever”??? What kind of lame parley is that?
“Dissing” used to be a lot more artful.
Laconic.
A kind of “parley” to get Yer ass shot.
