Calhoun County Republicans Censure Rep. Peter Meijer

The Executive Committee of the Republican Party of Calhoun County, MI, has sent a letter of censure to Rep. Peter Meijer. Meijer is the Representative from Michigan’s 3rd district, which is the district that had previously been represented by Justin Amash.

The censure was in response to Meijer’s vote to impeach President Trump, and also for his vote to certify the election results. Meijer’s district includes only a portion of Calhoun County; most of his district is the Grand Rapids area. There was a censure motion in the 3rd district GOP organization, too, but it failed in an 11-11 tie.

I didn’t vote for Meijer in the primary election, as he seemed too GOPe for my taste. But I did vote for him in November.

I have never gotten involved with the county GOP organization. I did a lot of volunteer work for a congressional campaign back in 1988, but it was either before or after that campaign when I talked to some of the county people and quickly got the impression that they were not interested in having the likes of me involved. I may not have had enough of a country club vibe. And maybe the feeling quickly became mutual. I’ve contributed to candidates, but I’ve never given a dime to any of the GOP organizations.

But this new news about censure got my curiosity up, and I checked out the website: https://calhouncountygop.com/

This is not your 1980s GOP. I see that our county commissioner is in one of the photos. He has not been your typical GOPer. He and a GOP colleague shook up our county highway department, basically gutting it and starting over, much to the dismay of Democrats who said it could have been done some other way (but of course wouldn’t have been done). Our commissioners transformed it into an efficient, effective organization that over the past six years or so has reversed the trend of deteriorating roads in our county.

I am for the first time since the late ’80s inclined to get involved and support the county GOP organization. There are monthly meetings with guest speakers, which might be a good way to meet people. And the announcements say nothing about masks.

Today someone on Twitter or Ricochet, I forget which, was saying that conservatives can expect to get nothing accomplished if they don’t get involved at the local level. So maybe it is time to do that, although it is with some trepidation that I’m considering it. One of the ways I’ve stayed conservative over the past few decades is by avoiding association with Republican conservatives. And I’m sure I wouldn’t agree with everything these people come up with. Maybe I’d end up supporting some candidates that I don’t prefer. Such has happened before, as supporting one candidate tends to become a package deal involving others. But I don’t even agree with myself most of the time. And I get the impression that with these people who were willing to stick out their necks and censure Meijer for his destructive behavior, that getting involved wouldn’t be a complete waste of time.

Of course, this is without estimating how many Biden votes were fraudulent or illegal. It probably didn’t matter if a few stuck-up sticky-beak Republicans pooh-poohed that crude fellow Trump: Democratic machines could have churned out a few thousand more Biden votes if they had been needed.

Sticky-beak?  Is that a term I need to add to my vocabulary in order to talk politics?  (I don’t know what it means, but it sounds interesting.)

*Libertarians for Socialism, Suppression of Free Speech, and Foreign Wars.

And now you have the tedious cookbook libertarian Justin Amash driving the stupid to the LP.
