November 2020 and December 2019 Elections

Ballot boxA friend told me this weekend about his longtime neighbors, another data point in this unusual election season. This couple in their 80’s are lifelong Democrats. They voted for Ronald Reagan, and no other Republican ever. They voted for Hillary in 2016. Now they cannot wait to get to the polls and vote for President Trump. The political establishment, of both parties, and the whole lot of broadcast and cable media drove them to this point.

This octogenarian couple say it is because of the outrageous way President Trump has been treated every day since November 2016. It has been one long violation of our basic civic principles, a refusal to peacefully transfer power. This dyed-in-the-wool Democrat couple will vote for Trump as they voted for Reagan, to punish the bad behavior of the political class.

This is the same as the British voters who stunned the political establishment last December. Voters who had voted NO on BREXIT were so disgusted by the outrageous contempt for the people’s voice, shown by the whole British political establishment, that they crushed Labour and rewarded Boris Johnson with an overwhelming victory in the UK 2019 General Election. No, the polls did not predict anything of the sort, and the leftist media were all in against Boris Johnson.

Now, American voters have a chance to punish our political establishment, returning contempt for contempt in full measure. Past performance does not guarantee future results. You get the luck for which you worked. How much do we really want this election victory?

This post is about a different dynamic than others being remarked upon in other posts and groups, especially black voters registering much higher approval of President Trump than previous Republican presidents, as they should since he has worked so hard and produced such good results for their lives. The seasoned citizens of this post are perhaps closer to the Walk Away phenomenon, people saying they are sick of the behavior of their liberal/leftist peers and are walking away from the left. Here, the couple is not making any broader statement, rather they are responding with electoral support for the object of establishment bad behavior.

I cannot imagine a more important election than this for people to voice their support for America. No nation is perfect, but no one has striven more to be perfect and had a road map for that in our Constitution. “Perfect” means life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for every individual.

I don’t think Trump has been a bad president at all and don’t see the “dictatorial” fears as justified. And although he has a brash personality, Biden/Harris and the press in general has been so over the top in contempt that I also think my vote -if not selected by this- is more passionate in also registering my dismay that there is so much loss of ethics in the press and lack of even handed fair treatment. I thought we had defeated communism in part to keep from having a single state source of propaganda. In fact our own culture has sunken to an acceptance of rule by a political class and a press sell-out to it, that is equivalent, and dangerous. All else aside, we must vote agains that.

It’s good to hear they vote their conscience and are not robotically wired after all these years –

I hope this couple is typical. I keep reading that retirees are leaving Trump, but I have a hard time believing it based on the older Republicans I know. Even here on Ricochet there are many who were against Trump in 2016 who are now voting for him.
