Joe Biden’s First Blown Opportunity

Yesterday afternoon, Mr. Biden was presented with the opportunity to be and act Presidential, meaning that he had the chance to demonstrate that he has the capability to lead all of the United States of America, rather than just advancing the interests of his particular faction at the expense of his political enemies.

He failed, miserably so.

Mama was a Southern Democrat*. That was not too much of a surprise given where and when she was born. Southern Democrats tended to be very conservative. They would vote Democrat locally, because the local guys were conservative, but on the national scene? They might just vote for a Republican like Nixon. Still, she was […]

Too Many Provisional Election Musings

I’ve been biting my tongue on Facebook and Snoozing friends as fast as most of them can opine on the election. Feelings there are still running strong on all sides; informed opinions are few and far between. My ADHD has been pulling me in multiple directions, but the last thing anyone there needs is that “well, akshully…” guy.

But I have to say something, somewhere. So here are some of my observations and opinions about the “state of the race” just so I can speak my mind without nuking my friends list on FB. I can’t claim any great originality or insight, but I needed at least a couple of steps back to look at things outside the bonfire and gather my thoughts.

This week on “The Learning Curve,” Cara and Gerard are joined by Jason Riley, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute and columnist for The Wall Street Journal. Jason shares insights on the 2020 election, its implications for the next two years, and assuming Vice President Biden becomes president, how he may govern on K-12 education. They discuss the likely direction of policymaking with regard to charter public schools and school choice, and the influence of the teachers’ unions. Jason offers thoughts about the George Floyd tragedy and protests, the state of race relations across America, and how political, media, civic, and religious leaders could address the country’s deep divisions. Lastly, Jason shares lessons on race, economics, and education from Dr. Thomas Sowell, the subject of his forthcoming biography.

Story of the Week: Dr. Thomas Sowell, Hoover Institution Senior Fellow, describes the legal and regulatory barriers, promoted by the powerful and self-interested teachers’ unions, that prevent more students from attending the charter public schools that are successfully educating low-income minority children across America.

This week on “The Learning Curve,” Cara and Gerard are joined by Tara Ross, the nationally recognized author of Why We Need the Electoral College. On the eve of the 2020 election, they discuss the critical and controversial role of the Electoral College in determining which candidate will become the next President of the United States. Tara explains how the Electoral College functions, why the Framers established it, and why this key feature of the U.S. Constitution and electoral system has become such a lightning rod. They explore its historical role in balancing power between small and large states, encouraging candidates to build wide coalitions across numerous states and regions, and checking the excesses of popular passions. They also discuss the role of the Electoral College in helping to isolate closely contested elections to specific states, such as in Florida in 2000; and Tara shares thoughts on the current political landscape.

Stories of the Week: Results from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) show troubling declines in grade 12 reading performance – will the results reinforce arguments to end testing? Education Secretary Betsy DeVos announced she will no longer enforce the prohibition against religious organizations applying for federal funding for charter schools – opening charters to criticisms that opponents have long leveled, that these schools are not truly public.

A few weeks ago, I spoke with Michael Anton about his new book, “The Stakes: America at the Point of No Return.” The title says it all. America, in Anton’s telling, has reached a point of no return—the 2020 presidential election will determine (if it has not been determined already) whether we will continue to […]

Media Lies about Chinese Virus, Round 2

Arizona network news are lying about the Chinese virus, hoping to flip the state to their party this election. They are willfully deceiving their viewers, so yes, they are lying. The same almost certainly holds true for every other battleground state, as a minimum. There is absolutely no dispute about the facts, which are clearly displayed on the Arizona Department of Public Health Services website, as they have been for the past half year. Arizona has never been in real danger, and is not now in any coronavirus crisis. Who are you going to believe, the lying media or your own eyes?

The answer to lies is truth. The answer to fear is a combination of reassurance and counter-fear. Fear, a feeling, cannot be effectively answered with mere facts. As human beings, we are not logic machines, we are wonderfully made with both reason and emotion, with sense and sensitivity. The public health bureaucracy in Arizona, a political battleground state, has done a very fair job of presenting the facts about hospital capacity and COVID-19 versus other ailments driving hospital occupancy. At the same time, the worthless head of the AZDHS has mouthed the lab coat left’s lines, playing with the facts she must present to hurt President Trump and Arizona as much as possible in the service of Democrats. Pathetically, even conservative talk-radio has failed to show up and defeat her with real substantive questions at press conferences. Nor has Lord Governor Ducey faced any real, sustained challenges on the reality of the medical and life damage he has imposed with his dictates. Yet, from ICU beds, to respirator use, to overall occupancy, the pictures are very reassuring. That is precisely why local broadcast media avoid these graphics.

Trump In It to Win It

Ballot boxPresident Trump has never accepted losing in his lifetime. Oh, he has certainly gone through severe reversals in the very cyclical real estate business. However, Donald J. Trump has always had an eye on the next win, the next big success. 2020 is not a carbon copy of 2016, but it most certainly is another instance of Trump Speed competition, in this case competition for at least 270 electoral college votes. To achieve that goal, President Trump spent the past three and a half years working to broaden his pool of voters, especially among racial minorities long ignored by the Republican Party.

Hispanic/Latino voters:

In a recent Florida MAGA rally, President Trump specifically called on Puerto Ricans to get out and vote. Puerto Ricans are United States citizens, with the same right to travel within the boundaries of the United States as other citizens. Following the natural disaster of Hurricane Maria, the man-made disaster of chronic and endemic political corruption made recovery across Puerto Rico very slow. This was due to both poor infrastructure construction before the storm and rank local corruption trying to extract benefits from the massive federal aid. Some number of Puerto Ricans voted with their feet, moving to places like Florida, where a Republican governor welcomed them. The great fear is that these citizens will vote Democrat in Florida, bringing the political plague with them.

Former Reagan Speechwriter, and Ricochet Co-Founder, Peter Robinson sits down with Dave Carter to discuss everything related to the 2020 Presidential Election. From the state of the voting public to journalistic subterfuge, from the strengths and weakness of both candidates to the reliability of various polls and polling methods, Peter and Dave take on practically every aspect of Campaign 2020. The dynamics of this engaging and enjoyable conversation travel from serious political analysis, to two guys sitting on the front porch, wondering why more people don’t understand history, and beseeching the kids to get off the lawn. Along the way, Peter offers a compelling list of what could happen in the event of a Biden victory (it’s safe to say that you need to hear this).

Then Dave welcomes Ricochet Member Brady Kiel (Herrforce1) to the program.  Brady, an Air Force Reservist, spent some time in Dave’s old line of work as an active duty military historian.  As you might imagine, the guys have a great time comparing notes and trading stories, experiences and reflecting on their military service.  From start to finish, this episode is loaded with compelling conversation and even a few laughs.  We’re sure you’ll enjoy your time with Dave and his guests.

I am not a Trump voter so maybe I just don’t get it. But I think the focus by President Trump and conservative media on the Hunter Biden stories are a really, really, dumb strategy. This is not to say that it is a non-story. I think it is worth investigating and checking to see […]

November 2020 and December 2019 Elections

Ballot boxA friend told me this weekend about his longtime neighbors, another data point in this unusual election season. This couple in their 80’s are lifelong Democrats. They voted for Ronald Reagan, and no other Republican ever. They voted for Hillary in 2016. Now they cannot wait to get to the polls and vote for President Trump. The political establishment, of both parties, and the whole lot of broadcast and cable media drove them to this point.

This octogenarian couple say it is because of the outrageous way President Trump has been treated every day since November 2016. It has been one long violation of our basic civic principles, a refusal to peacefully transfer power. This dyed-in-the-wool Democrat couple will vote for Trump as they voted for Reagan, to punish the bad behavior of the political class.

This is the same as the British voters who stunned the political establishment last December. Voters who had voted NO on BREXIT were so disgusted by the outrageous contempt for the people’s voice, shown by the whole British political establishment, that they crushed Labour and rewarded Boris Johnson with an overwhelming victory in the UK 2019 General Election. No, the polls did not predict anything of the sort, and the leftist media were all in against Boris Johnson.
