Trump2020: A Response to One Objection
One objection to re-electing President Trump in 2020 is that, because he exhibits so many of the personal traits which conservatives have traditionally condemned, his election by Republicans casts the latter as hypocrites and removes character as a dimension on which future Republicans can differentiate their candidates from those of the Democrats.
While I made this argument during the primaries leading up to the 2016 election, I think it is no longer relevant. Republicans have already elected Trump; failing to re-elect him will not in any way redeem Republicans. We live in a hostile, left-leaning media environment, and there is no voice on the left that will speak well of Republicans for rejecting President Trump in 2020. That would require a degree of charity the left is completely unwilling to extend.
Whatever damage to the moral standing of Republicans that the election of President Trump can do has been done, and nothing will reverse it or make it significantly worse. Those who think otherwise are crediting the left with more grace than there is any reason to believe it possesses.
I continue to believe that, on balance, the arguments in favor of re-electing President Trump remain compelling.

I would prefer Calvin Coolidge and having and honest press. But we have to choose from the options we are given. A vote for Hogan is vote for AOC.
Yes I have. And I can recite the preamble.
Thank you for your comment. While the Mueller Report is 448 pages long, the Introduction and Executive Summaries of Volumes I and II are must reading. I have prepared them for you to be able to read. They are only 3, 7, 2, and 6 pages long, and combined are only 18 pages long.
I am supposed to condemn a man for being upset that he was falsely accused and illegally investigated for partisan political purposes? I will pass.
A pride-worthy Republican President is/was not an available alternative. The alternative is one of your other points, above.
Which historical Republican president in your lifetime has been pride-worthy? GHWB was a good man and worthy of respect for his personal merits. GWB could be respected for his self-redemption and some of his actions. Neither showed themselves to be independent of the influence of the left-leaning organizations in WDC. I respected Eisenhower, the guy who made deals with dictators to oppose communism. Was that worthy of pride?
I opposed Trump vehemently during the primaries. I liked Walker, then Cruz. I would even have preferred Fiorina. I voted for Trump — and it was painful — in the general, but I would have voted against Hillary no matter the personal flaws of the Republican candidate. To do otherwise would have been to place Party above Country.
Are you really ready to sacrifice a republican form of government (the goal of the left per the Electoral College initiatives) on the alter of personal morality? Do you not care if the President is objectively anti-American as long as it is in the other party so you don’t feel personally attached in any way? To lose with honor is the greatest virtue? Do you think the other side, once victorious, would play by the rules and risk losing to your moral paragon in the future?
No wonder the other side is winning.
