The Red Hen Is a Canary in the Coal Mine

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders was asked to leave the Red Hen Restaurant in Virginia along with her seven guests. They already ordered, but a snowflake waiter decided he didn’t like her because she worked for President Donald Trump.

The owner came in and asked the employees what “they wanted her to do.” They said expel Sanders, so she was asked to leave, and she did. Why did this remind me of the 1960s lunch counters where blacks were refused service based on skin color?

Sanders was belittled by a vulgar woman masquerading as a comedian at the White House Correspondents Dinner, even calling her the “Uncle Tom of white women,” who got a laugh at her expense. The double standard of what is acceptable has become absurd.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary, Kirstjen Nielson, was recently bombarded by protestors chanting “no borders” inside a Mexican restaurant while she was dining. The harassment was allowed by the manager and it forced her to leave.

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi was harassed at a recent screening of a new Mr. Rogers documentary. The protestors approached her asking her questions, became very aggressive, and police were called to escort Ms. Bondi from the Tampa Bay theatre. A local paper reported,

“The video they are choosing to share is of the least aggressive portion of the attack that transpired after police arrived to control the scene. What they are not sharing publicly are several previous encounters involving large men getting in the Attorney General’s face, spitting and blocking her exit,” the spokesman, Whitney Ray, said in an emailed statement. “The Attorney General tried to have a conversation with these individuals, however, when it became abundantly clear that they were not interested in a constructive dialog but were only there to cause a scene, the attorney general tried to leave the volatile scene.”

Vulgar threats were recently made against First Lady Melania Trump and her son by former actor Peter Fonda, to the point where the Secret Service was contacted.

The level of vitriol and vulgarity in the public square, in the entertainment world, on college campuses, in social media, even at a movie or restaurant, has increased to a startling level, where people, especially women, feel frightened for their safety. The recent harassment over political differences has overstepped the boundaries of “the right to protest” in our free society.

Further, the media is oddly silent on the recent IG Report showing the vulgarity and level of corruption and manipulation at the highest levels of our government and law enforcement during the last election. Not only was Trump and anyone associated with his campaign a target, but so was Bernie Sanders. The tolerant, progressive, and so-called politically-correct Left have created a new low in civility and decency, by words and example.

Heated issues such as immigration, healthcare, foreign policy, and more (problems that did not begin with the 2016 election) are worked through and solved through debate, votes, and democratic means. There can be no tolerance of violence or violating the rights of citizens, whether public or private, to where they feel unsafe in their public or private lives.

These incidents are our wake-up call, and we must ask ourselves if we should be accepting it as normal. Our freedoms as law-abiding citizens are being threatened; there are no more boundaries between having differences of opinion and actual hate. What should be done in this case and others?

I fear the Second Civil War is closer than we think.

Is the South ready this time? “They weren’t ready last time”…..this is a direct quote from my 82 year old Southern mother-in-law……sigh

We’re ready, but the battle lines won’t be nearly as clear as they were in 1861. A Second Civil War in America would be more like the Lebanese Civil War (1975-90) with a much, much higher body count. In other words, an unmitigated disaster from which the country would likely never recover.

That’s one way to eliminate the threat that the USA poses to the environment and world peace.  Didn’t the man did promise to fundamentally transform the United States of America? His party is trying to keep his legacy going.

As for contraceptives, I support the right of doctors and pharmacy owners not to supply them, but not pharmacy employees.

Vis a vis the State, employees should have the same conscious protections.  With respect to their employers, I agree – you take the man’s money, you dance to the tune he calls.

The business is located, if I recall, in a county that went 62% for Trump. It wasn’t smart on the owner’s part, but if she wants to put a sign out and limit the potential market for her restaurant, so be it. Ms. Sanders’ handling of it was well done.

Apparently the owner of this particular Red Hen forgot all about Yelp. After this brouhaha over Sanders needing to leave, the restaurant’s Yelp score now stands at 2.5 (And probably still falling.)

Best tweet I have read on the matter, “It should be re-named the Blue Hen.”

That will change.  There are a bunch of review there now that have nothing to do with the food or a personal experience at the restaurant – Yelp has announced they will go through and remove any comments that don’t appear to reflect an actual consumer experience.

Let’s hope that day never comes.  Isn’t the United States the beacon of hope around the world to people and countries that know real repression, and live everyday what you describe?  We’re forgetting that gift….

It’s a responsibility.  One that weighs too heavily.  It’s time to give up the “gift.”

As for a violent separation, since we’re not fighting over slavery I doubt that people will want to fight as violently over preventing a divorce.

So some new info.  According to Gov Huckabee, the story has not exactly been  completely reported.

According to him after his daughter and her party politely left the restaurant, the owner, followed them out and tried to organize a crowd to heckle them as they left.

If that’s true, it’s nuts – I would imagine her profits will be hurt after that stunt –

Speaking of …. there was a headline somewhere asking ‘where is he?’   We know there’s plenty going on behind closed doors – Hillary is fundraising although I’m not sure for what.  I am concerned about this new aggression toward conservatives and those working for our president.

As a young traveller on my first visit to London, I went to Brown’s Hotel for high tea, where the maître d’hôtel informed me that jackets were required. He then asked what size I wore and pulled a nice spare one from the small closet behind his desk. That’s good business!

I had the same experience, beaucoup years ago, at Times’ Square in NYC.

I was once lent a nice raincoat by a Times Square establishment.

    So that was you.

Yes but it was my cousin that denied you a tip.

Apparently, the co-owner of The Red Hen has given her resignation in a leadership role, as part of a local business group that “promotes positive business developments” within the community, and it was accepted:

“I’m not a huge fan of confrontation,” Wilkinson told The Post. “I have a business, and I want the business to thrive.” But, she went on to say, “This feels like the moment in our democracy when people have to make uncomfortable actions and decisions to uphold their morals.”

    Uh huh.

The left cares about their vision. People are just collateral on the road to their utopia. In my darker moments I’d like to see them get their way, if only to stare down on their shock as the masses burn before them. But then I remember the rope is tied to me as well and must take responsibility because that’s what my conservatism persuades me to do.

Would that Red Hen or any number of bitter, spoiled children were not only understanding of their own naïveté but that the culture at large would grapple honestly with the big questions. If only to keep civility.

But wait, that’s my White Privilege talking. Better keep an eye on that.

Shock of happiness? I just can’t see them worrying too much about that. Eggs for the omelet, you know.

The bigotry of low expectations is strong on the left. This quote from the CBS article is telling

Matt Yglesias, of liberal website Vox.com, replied, “Who is going to cook the food at Republican-only restaurants,” a reference to Republican support for border security.

So, only illegal immigrants can work in restaurant kitchens? Huh?

My thoughts exactly. I’ve seen similar comments to the effect of “Who’s gonna clean your houses and your pools and do your gardening?”

Er . . . I am? (Well, not the pool, because I haven’t got one of those.

This is how the left sees these people – as conveniently inexpensive servants.  And WE’RE the racists??
