Silicon Valley Snowflakes

By now you’ve heard about the memo that circulated at Google excoriating criticizing the company for its politically correct corporate culture, mindless “Diversity uber alles” policies, and intolerance for people with different opinions. To demonstrate their commitment to diversity, Google hunted down and fired him. In Silicon Valley, it would seem opinions critical of political correctness and diversity are ‘violence’ because ‘ they make people feel afraid.

How glad I am not to be a mewling snowflake. But if one of the points alleged by the memo is that some women (and weak, effeminate millennial beta males) are so emotionally fragile that they are a detriment to the workplace, doesn’t skipping work because a memo hurt their feelings kind of prove the point?

I can’t wait till the “Jerry McGuire-esque” movie about this comes out. Who has the cajones to make it?

Since 1995 I’ve been afraid that Hillary would put me in one of her internment camps, and have been expressing that fear publicly. Doesn’t that mean our country is committing violence against me by letting her remain at large?

‘Fraid you have it backwards.  You’re the perpetrator of violence for suggesting such a terrible thing about St Hill.

Lordy I’m glad I’m in my 70s.  Can’t imagine what life will be like in the not so distant future.  Tho, when I’m in my 90s, I believe society grants a pass; telling people to buzz off won’t subject me to a reeducation camp.  (I think.)

What’s all this crap about him never finding a job in the industry again? This industry is huge. Our give upism is incredibly disheartening.

Is that the same as realistic?

As long as this was a closely held event he had a chance.  Now that he public, chance are most companies will steer clear just to stay away from his story.  It will take years for the stink to go away from him.  At least 7 or more years before background checks start ignoring this event.  Small companies and startup may still be interested but the big guys are out of his future for the time being if not forever.

Example.  The last job my wife took was with EMC.  Their background check turned up a legal event 30+ years ago when she was caught driving a car without the correct paperwork.  She had to write a letter about the event and explaining why she would not do it again and guaranteeing that she would not embarrass the company doing such stuff.  Even then she was told they were considering not hiring her because of this but their time frame limited them exploring other options.

A lot of companies are very protective of their brand and will steer clear of anything that might tarnish it.  Outside that individual manager tend to shy away from such hires because if they hire him and he does something this stupid again it will harm the managers career, so why risk it?

That sounds like a ridiculously extreme case.

For Damore he’s already received two job offers, at least publicly. Engineering is an isolated job, he could be remote, he could be in a cave. I wouldn’t be surprised if his renumeration increases from this event.

I suspect Brave might hire him.  I’m making an assumption here that Eich had a reason for that name.  There are actually a couple of good editorials in today’s WSJ on this.  But Google has demonstrated, to their employees and the entire world, that when they blather on about information being free and not doing evil, it is all B.S.  Now to find a smart phone that uses neither ios nor Android. Sigh.

    Schadenfreudelicious!

Google is learning what the Democrats are learning. SJWs are feral animals. You think you can bring them onto the team and they’ll play nice and be tamed by throwing them a bone or two to gnaw on. But eventually they’ll demand so many bones that you can’t keep up, and they’ll turn on you.

A key difference between the two cases is that “driving a car without the correct paperwork” could be one of several crimes, some of which may even be felonies. Nothing Damore did is a crime and would not show up on a criminal background check.

He did work for Google, which is assumed to be a company that is difficult to get a job working for. He will have associated with him the the status of someone who was good enough to work at Google, and the fact he was fired for not being sufficiently conformist to the diversity policy means that nobody has a reason to question his competence.

As for whether or not he’ll cause trouble for some other employer, I think his behavior prior to being fired speaks well in his favor. He wrote this memo in a place that was intended for receiving feedback of this kind; it only went viral because someone else leaked it. This is not the way people who make trouble behave.

There was one charge and it was a misdemeanor.  Background checks are more than just criminal.  They are financial and they also check your social media background.  Many require you to give them access to your social media accounts so they can do a check.  What Damore did will show up in most background checks in some form.  i will grant that the EMC background check my wife went through was the most comprehensive I have seen since it went back 30 years and actually required you to come up with pay stubs of companies that you worked for that was no longer in business but I have seen other fairly comprehensive background searches.

For Damore he’s already received two job offers, at least publicly. Engineering is an isolated job, he could be remote, he could be in a cave. I wouldn’t be surprised if his renumeration increases from this event.

Or boycott. I had already begun moving my activities away from Google due to their corporate support for the Democrat party and left wing causes.

    Search – done

    News – done

    Maps – next

Gmail – gonna be a pain in the behind, but using it via an e-mail client denies the webmail page views.

    Youtube – toughest of all

Even making the changes I already have, I’ve probably cut their pageview revenue from my account by 90%.

Agreed! Google has always irritated me with the cutesy way it ignores events of true historic significance, but celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of obscure, but politically timely, individuals. This action (firing the memo-writer) was the last straw. I looked up a different search engine and that will be my last Google search. Mapquest handles mapping issues. I have a gmail account that I don’t use and that can be eliminated. Etc., etc. Probably won’t make a hill of beans difference to Google, but it makes me feel a whole lot better.

How much longer can Google stay King of the Mountain if they do stupid things (prove in public that they are a narrow-minded echo chamber) and hire stupid people (women who can’t cope with a critique (from a person who supports “diversity”) that the diversity programs as currently implemented are not likely to achieve the desired diversity goals)? These actions suggest that there’s room in the market for a smarter entrant that is better in tune with the real world. May not happen immediately, but history is full of companies that got big and complacent and then lost their focus.

He posted on Google’s internal MB that solicited input.  There’s no evidence that he’s Alt-Right.  I realize you’re to some extent playing the Devil’s advocate, but the full text of what he posted disproves your assertions.

He created a public embarrassment for his employer and open them up to legal action. This shows bad judgement on his part as far as the company is concerned. Few companies will want to hire him because he may do it again, or they may get pulled into this legal mess that Google is going through. If you Google Damore name you will see they are already calling him the newest poster boy / martyr of the Alt-Right.  As far as hiring him will go that is what the background search will find and why most HR departments will filter him out.  Before this is over Damore will be an Alt-Right villain and Google will be the feminist champion saving the world for females everywhere.  If you are a manager why would you hire such a bad actor?  How would you justify his hire to who you report to?  You legal department would not allow the liability exposure.

I thought truth was a defense.  We know the Left goes crazy about such  things, but there are also many women defending him.  As others have posted, it will be interesting to see what happens from SJWs attacking these left leaning Silicon Valley companies.

In 2006, an editor of a Surveying magazine was interested in my first article on the history of GPS.  But he was also worried because many of his advertisers accepted the story that the AF invented GPS.  In 2013, my book on GPS was published.  Last year, I spoke to AF Space Command and was introduced by the four star general who commanded it.  I went from being a controversial person to being feted by the AF.  My opinions did not change; rather, our arguments were persuasive and there were people in the AF who were open to them.  Something similar may happen here in some high tech companies (though probably not in Google for a long time).

Then we’ve already ceded the territory to them. We’ve already decided not to fight back. Achieving left-wing totalitarianism is no longer an ‘if’, it’s a ‘when’ and it’s sooner rather than later.

But he’s not.  Unlike the internet, you actually have to prove this type of thing in court.  This memo just doesn’t support that assertion.

SJWs are feral animals. You think you can bring them onto the team and they’ll play nice and be tamed by throwing them a bone or two to gnaw on. But eventually they’ll demand so many bones that you can’t keep up, and they’ll turn on you.

It is very much like the French Revolution. Monsieur Guillotine was perfectly happy to start with nobles, and then move on to whomever else fell out of favor – like those who overthrew the nobles in the first place.

One doesn’t have to circulate a memo to draw negative comments or attention. In my last performance review, after they had used the word “brilliant” to describe my technical contributions – this automatically made the evaluation suspect in my mind – I was told that I have a deep, resonant voice that sounds too assertive in meetings. I was advised to soften my tone. I suppose that meant sound more feminine, but I didn’t ask. Since I had a meeting with my financial advisors the previous week where I was told that “work is now an option for you”, I was able to respond in my performance review exactly as I thought appropriate.

Maybe but not in time to help Damore or keep his family fed.  I suspect that Damore will land on his feet someplace (or maybe not) but his corporate America future has been diminished because of this event.  Seeing the video I suspect that Damore was a little naive and actually thought that Google meant what they said about posting stuff instead of the unwritten rule of only post stuff that we like and makes us money.
