Thanks, that article is a dark read, and I needed a smile too.

I read this article with dismay and have many questions. Why is it that I had never even heard of the “alt right” until a couple of months ago? Does anyone else think it strange that people could harrass French or Erickson children? How would they even know what their kids look like? There is something going on here that I do not understand. Could this be dirty tricks from the left or is it a legitimate group from our side with misguided intentions?

Because they kept their mouths until a certain candidate (probably unwittingly) convinced them it was their time.

    1. They were mostly self-contained on the internet (see vdare and Taki’s magazine) and latched on to Trump as their avatar of war against the establishment. The establishment also latched on to the alt-right in the hope they could use them as an anchor to sink Trump in the primary.
    2. No, people are awful.
    3. That I don’t know, but the amount of information people release on the internet is awesomely irresponsible, and I don’t put it past crazy people to peruse Facebook to stare at the enemy that is David French.
    4. It could be both, but it’s probably the alt-right itself instead of a front group for leftist operators. There is a thriving Internet subculture across ideological lines that lives to inflict misery.

Human nature.  The way I’m coping with it now – with the reality of co-existing with other human beings – is by reciting my new mantra:   “Be amazed.  But NEVER surprised.”  It’s really spared me some teeth-gnashing and helps quell incipient depression.

Bryan, I wish I could share your gratitude. Unfortunately I’ve been disabused of the idea that R> is any sort of haven. There have been multiple posts here regarding such threats and violence — racial, ethnic, religious, and otherwise — and Ricochet is full of people who make excuses for it. They say it’s exaggerated, or the left is worse, or it’s only harmless Russian Twitter trolls, or (as @goldwaterwoman above) try to peddle false flag conspiracies.

Now that I’ve read French’s piece I will say that this is in large part why I’ve opposed Trump since right after he entered the race. I’ve been shocked by none of it. I would have only been shocked had such behaviors not been engendered (if not indulged) by the Trump campaign.

Does anyone remember 6 years ago how people on the Right got together, held rallies and left the places cleaner than when they arrived?  Weren’t you proud to be a part of something like that?  That seems like so long ago, in another world.

We are so much better than this election.  At least, I hope so.

I must agree, until this election I was not aware of the pervasiveness of these alt-right groups. But, they have in fact been there all along hiding in the underbelly of reddit and 4chan and other chat boards of the internet. It is the same old prejudices and bigotries though, just repackaged and rebranded for a modern age. Having drifted at the edges of the political discussion in the rise of Trump they have found their vehicle for infiltrating the main stream discussion with in the Republican party, thanks to their affinity to populist nationalism. They are not the constructs of foreign agents or leftist, though both of these groups wittingly or unwittingly encourage them. We should fear oppose their rise, not because they will be unsuccessful, but precisely because they can and will be successful peddling and winning with their policies of white nationalism.

After Lois Lerner and The trashmasters of Begala and Carville, a response was inevitable.  Both sides fight dirty. One does it with badges and your tax money. The other with just anger and hatred.  One is organized, the other is hiding in the woodwork. I have seen this since a Union thug tried to grab me off a truck when I was thirteen.

I do find the timing of this missive and laying it on Mr Trump by association to be in line with NRO becoming the HuffPo of the Donor Class.  I would have had more sympathy for Mr French had this come out a month ago, instead of being timed to game wavering #Nevers.

Just because the left hates us doesn’t mean we should live down to their expectations.  And I never said we should be out to impress the Left.  We do it for ourselves.  We do it for our kids and our legacy.  We do it to set a good example.  And we do it because it’s right.

And Republicans gained 63 House seats, 6 Senate seats and 680 state legislative seats.

Yet that is no excuse to degenerate or defend the alt-right and their monstrous ideology. When I hear people express these kind of statement I recall Booker T. Washington’s philosophy of dealing with the prejudices against him. His philosophy was that you defeat such discrimination not by giving in and being no better than that which you are compared to, but by rising up and being beyond reproach. The hostility of the left should make us be better people, not to live down to their expectations. Sadly that is not what we have done with Trump.

I’ve mentioned before that the Trump insurgency is made up of people who are tired of incorrectly being labeled racist and actual racists. The first group really doesn’t want to acknowledge the second group’s existence. I understand why many have the impulse to downplay and excuse, but I disagree we are buying into progressive worldview by calling it out.

True, but they weren’t merely demonized. The regime used the armed might of the state to wreck their lives, should they continue their defiance.

The Republican party did nothing about it, ever, except to hold a few impotent hearings after the deed was done.

Hence, Trump- and hence the “alt-right.”
