The End of Fox News?

carlson_vansusterenWith the news today that not only will 21st Century Fox be shelling out $20 million to Gretchen Carlson, but that Greta Van Susteren will be giving up her show immediately in favor of Brit Hume, one wonders how many days it will take for the whole of the network to implode.

What this portends for conservative media in the short- and long-term remains to be seen though it looks like this particular 20-year reign is over.

As the lurid and disgusting details come out, the question that needs to be asked: can the conservative movement, which makes all kinds of claims concerning morality and proper values, continue to support an organization that not only supported Ailes’ profligacy, but shunned those who sought to shine light on the problem.

Is this really something conservatives should remain in league with?

WI Con: Re-locate the New York bureau to somewhere like Chicago or Kansas City

Transplanting liberals to conservative places doesn’t work. CNN, pre-TimeWarner was mostly based in Atlanta.

Chicago is the biggest liberal pile of dog doo west of Detroit.

Rupert screwed up the WSJ and is now taking down FNC.  He used to build properties, now they serve a purpose to maintain his wealth.

Oh well. Time for some scrappy new outlet to become the conservative Facebook/Twitter/Video Network.

WI Con: Re-locate the New York bureau to somewhere like Chicago or Kansas City. I’m sure the respective cities would throw money at them and you’d break up that ‘cultural monopoly’ that is New York.

How about a state with Constitutional carry.

Herbert: Not sure how talking to a subordinate about breast sizes and your favorite porn movie can be considered not sexual harassment

Given the fact that when Thomas left the Dept. of Education to chair the EEOC, Hill chose to follow him as his assistant, I have doubts about how much she actually felt that she was being harassed.  (That’s if you believe her claims as to what he did.)

Frankly, it has occurred to me to wonder if Hill’s main problem with Thomas was that he married outside his race.  I have personally known black professional women who complain about the shortage of black men at their socio-economic level.  I have also heard some pretty blunt comments about black professional men who have chosen to date and/or marry outside their race.

I doubt it was true in this case as both Thomas and Hill admitted Thomas had asked her out on numerous occasions to be turned down.

    From Time:

While Hill would maintain that he had asked her out five to 10 times during the period in question, he denied that he had ever asked her for even a single date. Rather, he said, Hill was someone he had helped at every turn, someone he considered a friend. That accusations of harassment should come from her seemed to him particularly hurtful. “During the past two weeks,” he said, “I lost the belief that if I did my best, all would work out.”

I’m not sure how a network publicly doing the right thing (by firing Ailes) and an on-air personality exercising a clause in her contract to depart as a result of Ailes’ termination portends the downfall of the network. I see it as healthy. If similar contractual options exist in certain other hosts who are outside of the news division exist, I would like to see them exercise those options like Van Susteren did. A shake-up in parts of the 8 PM – 11 PM time slot would do wonders in breathing new life – and seriousness – into the network.

She:I like Brit very much, but he is a bit long in the tooth.

However, he knows everyone, and as last night’s show (which I watched just to see) demonstrates, he can put together a fairly impressive line-up of guests on a moment’s notice, and can deliver the goods.

I’ve always been a fan of Brit, going back to his ABC days even.  he was always balanced, and seemed the perfect face for Fox News when they launched.  I’m glad to see him come out of semi-retirement to helm a show for a couple months.  But then again I was never a huge Greta fan, she was fair and all, just never quite cared for her presentation.  As far as post election, this time slot will be the first big challenge for the folks running Fox News now, hope they get it right.
