Phyllis Schlafly, RIP

Phyllis SchlaflyLong time social conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly has died at age 92.

Today, Phyllis Schlafly passed away in the presence of her family at her home in St. Louis, Missouri.

An iconic American leader whose love for America was surpassed only by her love of God and her family, Phyllis Schlafly, an indomitable pro-family grassroots advocate and organizer, was 92 years old. Mrs. Schlafly was preceded in death by her beloved husband Fred and is survived by six children along with 16 grand and 3 great grandchildren.

Schlafly first came to prominence in 1964 with her best-selling book, A Choice Not An Echo, which harshly chastised what came to be known as Rockefeller Republicans. In 1972, she founded the pro-family Eagle Forum, which was dedicated to opposing radical feminism and helped prevent the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment.

If William F. Buckley Jr. was the father of the modern-day conservative movement, then Mrs. Phyllis Schlafly was the movement’s mother.

A great woman. A great American. A strong Catholic. Well done, good and faithful servant.

    Requiescat in pace.

Sad to hear this news, Mrs Schlafly is an unsung hero in preserving our American values. Her fight against the ratification of the equal rights amendment alone did a lot more good than anyone could know. Rest in peace dear lady

This says it best, so I must repeat it. RIP Mrs. Schlafly.

What gets me is she was still active in political commentary.

Probably her most significant political act was her opposition to the Equal Rights Amendment, and there’s a good chance it would have passed without her organizing the opposition.

She must have known something that could lead to a Hillary indictment.

I saw her speech at Cornell a bit over 20 years ago.  There were protesters, including one with a sign that said “Cute boys wear dresses too.”  It was left behind so I snagged it and had her autograph it.  I got it laminated.

    While I listen to
Live Sports on Houston Astros 3 vs Cleveland Indians 2, at Berries Cafe in Watertown, WI  I learnt of her death. I am sadden to lose another fine conservative who help steer my thoughts rightfully. As a young teenager, I read A choice not an echo.

Lord, allow this fine woman a speedy repose to your side. I pray to the Lord. Lord, hear my prayer. Amen+

RIP. I first heard of Ms Schlafly during the Equal Rights Amendment in the 1970’s. She was very brave in opposing that monstrosity.

It was only in the last few years I realized just how consequential Phyllis Schlafly was to America.

I have occasion to visit Eagle Forum Galactic Headquarters from time to time here in my beloved River City. Mrs. Schlafly has a wall where she had editorial cartoons mocking her efforts at defeating the ERA framed and hung. She was a class act and a happy warrior.

No. Don’t. Go and soak it all in, and understand why Andrew Breitbart was right: these people should be given no quarter, because days like this, the truth shines through. These people are absolutely vicious, and given the power and authority, would go French Revolution on you and yours in a heartbeat.

Go and look, and know exactly what we’re up against. Dispense with your illusions about “your good friends across the aisle”. Today’s a useful reminder of just how much they hate us. Not dislike us. Not disagree with us. Hate us.

RIP. She taught my first how to read. How ignorant I was of her political influence at the time, her First Reader is a phenomenal primer on reading.

Learning her politics just made me liker more.

I have a friend who interviewed Mrs. Schlafly some years ago in graduate school.  This fervent feminist was treated with nothing but kindness and respect.  She disagreed with some of the ideas put in front of her, but she found nothing disagreeable about the interviewee.  In fact, she thought Schlafly was very gracious and very, very smart.   I know this friend will cringe as much as anyone here when reading Jacobins on Twitter.

So I say laugh at those sorts of people who yield knives in the dark of their basements, but don’t magnify them much.  They deserve your contempt.  Not your attention.  That second is all they want.

May Phyllis herself rest in peace.

I had the opportunity to meet her briefly at a Cardinal Mindszenty event a number of years ago.  I dug out a college paper I did on the Equal Rights Amendment and asked for her autograph.  Her reply was “Oh, I remember those days.”

…a vote for Trump will simply be a matter of virtue-signaling.  – Tom Meyer, Ed.

As a former devotee of her Eagle Forum podcasts, I’ve been comforted these past few months knowing that I was in good virtue-signaling company.
