Anchor Babies Showdown: Yoo v. Coulter
Last week, Ricochet contributor and podcast host John Yoo posted Trump No Conservative in Opposing Birthright Citizenship, making the case that Trump’s proposal to end birthright citizenship is unconstitutional. The post generated hundreds of comments, both on and off the site, including this one from our old friend and avid Trump supporter Ann Coulter:
I know it's been a long time out of power, but it's utterly humiliating 4 John Yoo to claim that 150 yrs of S. Ct law supports anchor babies

We saw this exchange and promptly booked them for this week’s Ricochet Podcast on Friday 8/28 at 9AM PT/12PM ET. We’ll use a lot of the comments on John’s post as the basis for our debate. So Ricochet members, please join us live in the chat room (the podcast version will be out later that day). Not a member? That’s easy to fix — join today and be part of the great experiment.
It promises to be a Yuuuuge time for all.

I don’t think we need to worry about this part. We’re going to be called racists regardless of what we do :)
Yea, where’s that Mickey Kaus guy? We need to kick him around a little bit…
BThompson, I’d be with you on this, except that the answer is always “lets don’t fight about that because let’s fight about this instead!”
No fight.
Brilliant. Let’s fight for something that doesn’t fix the problem because we don’t think others will fight for the things that will fix the problem. The stupid gets deeper every week on the right.
That’s not very civil.
As has been pointed out, the fact that we will be called racists no matter what, and that no fight will be had no matter what, really takes the wind out of the sails of any intricate strategery. The cowardice and corruption of the GOP has taken a toll.
Fine, that doesn’t change the fact that ending birthright citizenship doesn’t actually solve anything. It is just a legal and political nightmare that even if it somehow gets implemented simply puts millions of current citizens status in legal limbo. It’s insane to think this is a workable strategy or one that accomplishes anything very useful at all. It’s simply “Do something! Anything! Because I’m mad, damnit!”
Stupid, stupid, stupid.
Changing birthright citizenship would eliminate the anchor baby. You feel it’s not a problem, perhaps, but I disagree.
