…and Rest in Peace, Harry Reid
A tough day all around. Veteran Nevada political reporter Jon Ralston announced Tuesday night that former Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid has died at age 82.
Reid served as a US Senator from Nevada for 30 years, retiring in 2017. He led the Senate Democrats from 2005 until his retirement and was the Majority Leader from 2007 to 2015.
Prior to that, Reid was a city attorney for Henderson, NV, a member of the Nevada State Assembly, Lieutenant Governor, and Chairman of the Gaming Commission. Before being elected to the Senate, he represented Nevada’s 1st District in the US House for two terms.
Reid had long been a thorn in the side for Republicans, famous for bare-knuckle politics beneath a mild-mannered demeanor. He is survived by his wife, Landra Gould, and their five children.
Rest in peace, Senator.

The world is a slightly better place without him, and Satan can have him in Hell.
You are making the assumption that he wasn’t in back-stabber mode while he was kissing up. Swampers gotta swamp.
It’s true.. He would stink up hell. Even a hell that contains Hitler , Stalin and Mao.
That’s going a bit too far, don’t you think?
You’re right, I forgot about that.
This:
And the impeachment/Jan 6 BS from Romney combined with all times he sucked up to Trump when it suited his aims is why we hate his guts (and, yes, his record as a captain of de-industry, too). He doesn’t give a rip about the people. He’s all about his own self-interest. He makes a good oligarch, though. One of The Thirty.
And I voted for the loser in 2012 despite being ABR right up until there was no other choice, like the good little anti-Democrat I am.
At least you didn’t actually vote for the Democrat, unlike some people we know.
Same. I remember the ABR wars on Ricochet. We had some hardcore Romney supporters here who were deeply insulting toward anyone who preferred another candidate.
And it’s one reason I still can’t bring myself to give much credence to Powerline. They were brutal toward people who wanted someone other than Romney.
Did the Anybody But Romney people still vote for Romney though they didn’t much care for him.
I did. The Republican candidate being a punk didn’t change the fact that the Democratic candidate was a bigger punk. The same thing happened with McCain and with Trump. The difference was that I thought that Romney might win. With the others, I was confident that they wouldn’t.
I did, expecting him to lose anyway. I mean, when both candidates are losers, you go for the one that’ll do the least amount of damage. (Same reason I voted for Trump in 2016.)
We were instructed that Romney was the only candidate who could beat Obama. When he didn’t, those Romney-fans didn’t really own up to their wrong assertions.
I wasn’t here for the ABR wars. Personally, I am quite open to the Ben Shapiro who didn’t vote for Trump but when Trump became a conservative he wasn’t invited unto MSNBC anymore. Susan Quinn is fantastic on this point during the Trump wars.
Not did those same jerks vote for Trump.
We held our noses and were good solders, and they betrayed us.
Never Trump, every single one, was a betrayer. We voted for your losers over and over, and whe it was time to step up, you stabbed us in the back.
That’s because they’re smarter/better/more “principled” than we are. Just ask them!
That’s when it really bugs me. I try to be open to people who disagree with me. I tend to be a bit grumpy with people who disagree in a brusk and vulgar manner. But many of the Never Trumpers were really quite mean. It was ungentlemanly.
Yeah, that always astounds me. The GOPe puts up their establishment candidate and declares that we must vote for him because it’s a binary choice! And we do because even if he’s stinky Romney, we know having a Democrat in the White House is worse.
But we put up a candidate that the GOPe hates, and instead of doing what they demand we do, they vote for the Democrat.
To the innermost circle with them all!
To be fair the first time they encourage us to vote for somebody in the hopes that the whole thing would be thrown into the house and then they would get to select somebody who didn’t get like 95% of the votes and that was defending democracy.
Also, there are so few of them, and they’re really not that influential, that they could possibly have delivered the disaster we’re living under in a Biden administration. It’s not their fault. No repentance necessary.
Besides, it’s really Trump’s fault. Because despite agreeing with 90% of his policies, all they were asking was that he stop being. . . well, Donald Trump. That would have fixed everything!
/sarc off
The party that throws out my vote, I throw out.
I do not view things as binary decisions like most. In many cases, I would much rather have a full blown socialist in office over a limp-wristed Lincoln-worshipping statist Republican. Because at least the violent pushback would swing things in the other direction fast enough (Obama < Trump) than the slow, gradual death we endure for voting these Republicans who print endless streams of fiat.
That could be true if politics are always a pendulum. However, it took Russia about 70 years to get rid of communism, and free up East Germany, Poland, et al. It can take a long time for the pendulum to swing. In our nation, the “right” has been waiting decades for Roe v. Wade to get fixed, they’ve been patiently fighting within the rules and have finally reached a point where something can change. The left’s response will be violent, to be sure, if there is success.
The other perspective is that the shifts in politics are less like a pendulum and more like a cake. Once the ingredients are mixed together and baked, they can’t be undone. In this perspective, if you leave the cake out in the rain, it will be ruined. If we let the communists take over our country, something very special and unique will be forever lost.
Another problem with pendulum politics is every time it swings to the right, it doesn’t swing as far and every time it swings to the left, it swings farther to the left.
It’s not a pendulum. It’s a ratchet — always leftward. Because leftism returns us to a state of nature wherein envy, violence, and decadence prevail.
I attended a speech by Ann Coulter at a prolife event in the early 2000s. She pointed out that the first violence, a clinic bombing, didn’t happen until about fifteen years after the decision and there had only been a few random incidents since then. She was encouraging us to continue the peaceful, legal fight. It does appear to be finally producing results.
I don’t know why that would be. Abortion will probably still be legal in most states, especially those where the Left mostly are.
