The tippi-toppers of higher ed are out of breath—they’ve run themselves into nonsensicle circles. But today’s guest Glenn Loury is breathing easy. He, Peter and Rob discuss the Ivy League, Claudine Gay and the advancement of Black Americans, both due to and in lieu of Affirmative Action.
Stay tuned to the end for Rob Long’s 100% gurantee, “Impress Anybody on Planet Earth: Extra Special Eggnog” recipe.

A book chronicling Rob’s time at graduate school sounds like a great idea!
Allow me to suggest a title: “Snapshots from Hell.”
Oh, wait.
“Conversations With My Academic Advisor?”
I suppose because of the different microphone setup etc this time, I wound up going through and increasing the level of Peter’s talk to be more even with the rest.
Which also led to a sort of graphical display of how long it can take Peter to ask a question…
I really like Peter Robinson’s love of black history.
I don’t care how long this podcast goes. It could be 90 minutes every time.
Another splendid podcast, with another splendid guest…
To my delight, Rob Long pronounced “long-lived” with [laivd] as the second syllable, as it should be.
And particularly the forgotten ascension part. I agree that we need that kind of positive culture building today.
I find Peter’s questions to be one of life’s delights. They are to be savored like a treasured song or the perfect hamburger.
I find myself screaming “Will you just get to the point already?!”
I think we should talk more about old-school Chinese immigrants. They came to America illiterate and nearly penniless and now their kids go to the Ivy league. (Provided that they can get around the discriminatory tendencies of the Ivies.) There was not anything equivalent to the Civil Rights Movement for Chinese-Americans. They just developed themselves without much government assistance.
Mainstream culture needs to do more to promote these stories.
Sometimes he sounds like Miss Anne Elk.
I think analysis by Thomas Sowell shows that groups that were successful without using government, or the political system are more successful on average. The Irish, for example, are less successful.
To Rob and Peter, we are now allowed to say Merry Christmas because Trump won the War on Christmas. Just one more thing to thank him for.
“Kneel, Pray, Kneel, Pray.”
Agreed. I delight in Peter’s questions as well, but I’d say rather than a perfect hamburger, they are more like a juicy pot roast that takes hours to simmer.
Perfect!!
Funny, I likened it more to trying to chew your way through a shrink-wrapped fruitcake.
