Podcasting In America

Even without being on the ballot, Democrats are determined to make the midterms about Donald Trump. And since that’s what they want to talk about, we wanted to hear from our friend Debra Saunders again, whose just launched her podcast Covering Trump. Deb fields questions from Rob, James and Charles about meat-and-potatoes stories, the mythological neutral reporter, and the incentives to write confirmation bias stories.

The guys also talk about actual potatoes and wonder why op-ed writers think it’s strange that Americans care most deeply about the price of them; there’s a bit on the intersectional nightmare that took place in Dearborn, Michigan; and eventually (inevitably, perhaps) the conversation turned to… Supertramp. Love ’em? Hate ’em? Let us know in the comments!

Supertramp was one of the best concerts I ever went to.  Saw them at Alpine valley on the Breakfast In America tour.  Probably “the” band I’d most like to see get back together, although Davies and Hodson pretty much hate each other so it’ll never happen.

The last concert I saw about two weeks before the Covid lockdowns hit was a Roger Hodson “solo” show.

The reason Democrats are going against the grain of American public opinion toward the precipice is not hard to fathom: Democrat staffers and their peers in the press went to prominent universities. Immediately after graduation, the media cohort were hired into big positions—at The Times, NBC, etc.—without working up through the farm system of weekly papers and small TV stations, as Debra mentioned, where they would learn the basics and experience the wisdom-producing reality that they know nothing! (I was a beat reporter/feature writer for two daily but small metropolitan newspapers in the late seventies, early eighties, and so have some understanding of this.) They’re leading the eco-social hysteria inculcated during their college years and impressing it on their political buddies in the Democratic base. They are fools for stature/status over competency and have a religious assurance of their truth being the truth and thus foolishly believe they can save the earth (which will exist indifferently long after they’ve gone), and this belief is much more important to them than the price of food or our ability to grow food. Inflation makes them feel like they’re on the right track, and that’s all that matters.

I also agree with Debra that Trump is spiraling down. And I think that eventually it will be clear that the chaos surrounding his administration was more the result of the media’s hysterical response to everything he did than to things he did.

Leftism is a cult.   Once you realize that, all the behaviors make sense.  The cancel culture.  The constant virtue signaling.  The ignoring of crimes by leaders.   The narrative over the truth.   That people in the cult cannot recognize the cult.

When Rob was talking about media partisanship, I thought about the writer William Manchester.  I have read five books by him, but one of most memorable things I ever read from him came from an introduction he wrote for a version of Churchill’s memoir, My Early Life.  He wrote that almost anything you read has a point of view.  No one spends four or five years of their life without some thoughts of the person or thing they are researching.  Either positive or negative.  Why would anyone spend that time, if they are NEUTRAL about the subject?   I believe this applies to political writers too.  Why would you spend your whole life writing or broadcasting about politics, unless you have an opinion?  That is why I agree with Rob’s suggestion that journalist should tell people their beliefs.  I like having tweets or other writings by journalists.  We can then understand where they are coming from.

I was interested in hearing Harry’s back on the podcast. They haven’t been present on any of the podcasts I listen to in quite some time. It seems like the dust-up with Daily Wire and the consequent release of the god king’s own brand of razors may have put a dent in Harry’s growth. I have to admit that I have seriously considering making the switch to the alternative from Harry’s, but I bought a large pack of their razors shortly before the dust-up, and I am very likely to not need to make another purchase for more than a year.  I have a very light beard, and razors last three months for me, only beginning to dull in the last couple of weeks of use. I have to say that other than their politics, I find their products to be of superb quality. I certainly have gotten a closer, nick-free shave than at any time in my life, and I have been shaving for more than fifty years. If the return to Ricochet for advertising is an indication of the fact that they have lost a lot of customers, likely conservatives, I couldn’t be more pleased. I would very much have liked to register my personal protest at their woke stance, but it is likely to be more than a year from now before I will be able to do so. I have long felt that companies should keep their politics out of the marketplace. I don’t buy products because of the political leanings of their management. I buy them because they work for me. However, when a company makes a point of stating its political bent, and that bent is obnoxious to me, I will not buy or use their products no matter how good they might be.

You could go ahead and buy some now.  They’re not likely to spoil.

And/or you could give some as gifts, remember that time is coming!

Just listening to the podcast now and, like many here, I jumped on to comment on the Harry’s Razor sponsorship.

I almost never do product boycotts because it’s too much work: I’m not a big shopper and I don’t pay a lot of attention. Like Eugene, I’ve still got a few of Harry’s blades to go through. The razor was a gift, but I bought a bunch of blades awhile back. Unlike Eugene’s, my beard grows fast, but I don’t mind being scruffy so I can still go a few more months before I need to switch.

But switch I shall, because Harry’s screwed the pooch when, if the Daily Wire is to be believed, they told DW that they just weren’t Harry’s kind of people. I’m a Daily Wire kind of guy, so I figure Harry’s isn’t my kind of razor company.

Business being business, I understand that you want to take the money and do the spot. Won’t fault you for that. And maybe the folks at Harry’s are reconsidering their antipathy toward culturally conservative customers.

But unless that happens, I’ll let Harry’s be the razor-of-choice for transwomen with heavy beards, and I’ll switch to a company “for people like me” when my last Harry’s blades run out.
