This week we’re all about The Big Issues. First, RNC Chairman Reince Priebus stops by to talk about how we get back to the business of winning elections — yes, we can! Better organization, better messaging, and more sophisticated databases. Then, our hosts take center stage for a rousing conversation on immigration and yes, gay marriage. Our thanks to Ricochet member GayFreedomLover for his post A Gay Conservative Cries Uncle for providing the inspiration for this discussion.

BlueAnt: As someone steeped in IT buzzwords, I assure you “architecting” is actually a word.

I have to agree with Rob on this, and I also speak as someone steeped, perhaps “stewed” would be a better term, in IT buzzwords. Whenever someone starts to “verb” nouns I immediately think of Scott Adams’ M.T. Suit character in Dilbert.

As someone steeped in IT buzzwords, I assure you “architecting” is actually a word.  Mostly used by systems architects desperate to justify their existence when a new platform is being rolled out… but still, the concept does refers to something (theoretically) useful.

This was great as always, I just take a little exception at the idea that Cambridge is a hotbed of anti-Americanism. After the bombings, the building where I work, the tall building on MIT’s campus, was lit up like the American flag for 2 days, and there have been US flags scattered around the campus since then. It might be because we had more than our fair share of trouble from these guys, but I have not heard anyone even question any of this.

Peter: Enjoyed the show as always.  I didn’t realize that Dr. Piedra was your father in law, I studied under him when I was pursuing my Masters at the Institute of World Politics where he teaches Western Moral Tradition.  Truly a gentle man and an interesting person to learn from.

How lovely to hear that, David!  Thanks for mentioning this.  As it happens, Dr. Piedra–or, as we call him in the family, “Abo”–taught his last class of the term this very evening.

Oh my it is that time of the year again isn’t it?  He pushed us hard on Thucydides and the Peloponessian War.

Well, since coders code, developers develop, systems analysts analyze, and managers manage, the architects decided they needed their own verb to describe the magic they inflict on our development cycle.  I’m a deputized member of the grammar police, but it’s only fair to let them have their own buzzword.

(I’m not sure what the User Interface/Experience guys do, other than open dozens of bug reports on text alignment.)

But I’ll stand with Rob and draw the line at “impactful”.

Hmm.  Just because a word is used, doesn’t make it a “real’ word.  No matter how “impactful” it is.

You know what I hate about these podcasts?

“Last night I had dinner with…”

    “Recently I had dinner with…”

“Years ago I had dinner with…”

I’ve never had dinner with anyone but my wife and my parents.

Do you all have to be so darn interesting all the time?

I could have had dinner with Troy Senik but I was too cheap to buy.

I’ve had dinner with a cabinet secretary. Does that make my life interesting? Nope.

Dinner with network sports announcers. More interesting – but not enough.

I’d rather have dinner with the wife and kids.

I’ve heard Troy likes to share entrées.  That’s just too weird for me.

Perhaps I’ll also stick with the wife and kids.

Animals are sent through the mail. A friend I work with had chicks mailed to him. I ask how and never really got a good answer.

Looked up How chicks are shipped.
