God of the Two-Faced Podcast

Ok. We lied.

We swore that we we’re going to take this week off. But we’re not. So just like Janus, the two-faced God of Duality, we’re here to kick down the door of the New Year and not be content with bidding farewell to just 2023, but a whole century worth of old years.

James Lileks is your guide as we dance through a hundred years of New Years and then he takes your questions while heading into 2024.

Who needs Dave Barry? Lileks is the National Treasure this country doesn’t know it has. I enjoyed every minute.

    Except for that one part.

No, that part was fine.  That other part, though, Hoo Boy…

What a great way to start my year, with a solid shot of unadulterated Lileks. Better than a slug of Jameison.

The Vikings cursed? Consider the Jets fan, one win and then two generations of futility, 54 years, the great pyramid of Cheops was built in 27 years. Our musings in August are about how exactly the catastrophe will manifest itself this time. This year we found out after 4 offensive plays.

And Broadway Joe is reduced to hawking Medicare plans on cable tv.

In James’ pre-Riccochet days in had a wonderful series of podcasts called The Diner which seemed to be given a brief revived life with this episode. I was never quite sure why The Diner was sent the way of White Castle or Howard Johnson’s but I do hope for its return in 2024.

I, too, enjoyed this special podcast greatly.  Born in 1900.  I never thought about it before, but that would be excellent timing, except for the great influenza and that pesky polio.  And you would likely have a family to support during the depression.  My dad told me it was not so bad in California, where you could always get something to eat, but my mother suffered terribly in Minnesota.

    This can be arranged.

Now that I think about it, this will be arranged.

James, I have enjoyed your solo podcasts. Your decision to go to Minneapolis sounds just like my decision to come to Raleigh. The small town I grew up near was about an hour away from the “big city” of Raleigh. If you wanted to do anything you came here. I figured it would just be easier to move here. Same with my working at Rex Hospital. Wanted to work there since I was 8. The more you talked the more we had in common there. I feel blessed to have been able to achieve those goals and have lifelong friendships to show for it. Happy New Year!
