For The Benefit of Mr. Kite (and Key)

This week, Ricochet editor and podcaster to the stars Troy Senik stops by to talk about his new venture, Kite and Key Media, which produces explainers about issues in the news. So you could argue that this show is an explainer about explainers, but we are not going to be that meta. We also delve into the news of the day, including good governors and bad, what the heck is going on with President Biden, and some speculation on where the Republican party and the Conservative movement might be headed. Yes, we were supposed to have another guest this week, but that didn’t work out (maybe next week), so thanks to Troy for hanging out with us. Please return the favor by frequenting his new site?

Among other things, UBI couldn’t be fixed because the amount needed to live in a smaller town wouldn’t be enough to live in L.A. or NYC, and some people – despite reality – still want to live in L.A. or NYC.

No. Your choice as to where you want to live should not give you access to more of my wallet.

Maybe shouldn’t.  But it will.  Especially the pols in places like NY and PRC (People’s Republic of California) would insist.  Otherwise their subjects couldn’t afford to live there and vote for them.

And that may be another requirement to consider:  that UBI recipients give up their vote.

(Another issue of course would be that if UBI recipients can’t afford to live where they are now, they would disperse and pollute the rest of the country like already happens with lefty voters who flee the places they’ve destroyed, and then get to work destroying the places they flee to…)

James Lileks: My only question: what the rationale behind the aesthetic decision to add so much noise to the video?

How else to you expect anyone to accept that these videos are “hip” and professionally done unless the editor mucks up the picture as much as possible?

Charles Murray has supported a UBI as a replacement for the welfare state.

AEI took his podcast of this topic down for some reason. This makes zero sense to me.

    Troy Senik (View Comment):
Andrew Yang’s proposal would have allowed recipients to choose between conventional benefits or a UBI.

He had a chance to lead a great conversation on the topic and he totally blew it. People babble about this, but they never get at the root cause for why we need to think about doing it.

Nobody is going to follow up on this, but I think the interviews of David Stockman on Contra Krugman and the Tom Woods Show in September 2016 are decent discussions on where this is coming from. You can’t keep favoring capital over labor and favoring inflation over deflation given the state of technology and globalized labor markets.

Watch this video, and then realize he doesn’t even talk about globalized labor markets. This is going to end the hard way, one way or another.
