Boys In The Hoodies

As always, we’ve got everything you could ask for before starting your weekend. From global “warfare” to matters of taste, Ricochet’s got it all.

First we reconvene with Congressman Mike Gallagher, who shares his take on American defense, energy and the spectacularly bad priorities that have left our armed forces helping our enemies in their propaganda efforts. Then we bring on the one, the only, Vince Guerra–Ricochet member extraordinaire–who takes us through his gift to us all: the Movie Fight Club; where members get to duke it out over who has the best stinkin’ taste. (You’ll have to join Ricochet if you want in on the fun!)

The gang also give a toast to their old pal P.J. O’Rourke and ponder the supposed right-wing takeover of San Francisco’s education system.

Music from this week’s podcast: Shout by Otis Day and the Knights

And some promised clips:

Gallagher’s speech at Hillsdale College

And Peter, Rob and P.J.

That interview with Congressman Mike Gallagher was incredible.

I learned from him that the DEI of the PLA next to the UAV and the LNG is helpful to the 3-QUAD or was it the QUACK and the capital B bridge of the Indo-Pacific for the ABC and the XYZ for the CCP (officially the CPC) and the CCCP. There’s also the PCC for Cuba which might be on PCP which is both a drug and the CCCP for the PERU.  The Cs and the Ps across the sea go on forever.  See?  Si?

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_communist_parties

Indo-Pacific? Is that the area surrounded by Siam, Ceylon, Burma, and East Pakistan?  I’ve never heard that phrase before.  I remember Rush Limbaugh used to say that the Lefties appearing on talk shows were required to call India the subcontinent as a way to look smart.

Wikipedia: “Scholarship has shown that the ‘Indo-Pacific’ concept circulated in Weimar Germany, and spread to interwar Japan.  German political oceanographers envisioned an ‘Indo-Pacific’ comprising anti-colonial India and republican China, as German allies, against ‘Euro-America’.”  Sounds like the term has anti-American origins.

How about talking like a normal human being?

It seems to me that talking like this is usually a symptom of 1 of 2 things:

    1.  Trying to prove how smart you are
    2.  Being too detached from common ordinary people.

I don’t expect other people to know all the abbreviations and acronyms in my profession.  Most other professions don’t do this either.

Why does the one profession that is supposed to represent the America people talk like a person desperately trying to scam and hide something?

You can take the man out of the Marines, but you can’t take the Marine out of the man. Seven years in USMC Intel, he served on the CENTCOM assessment team under David Petreus. That’s the way these guys talk and he’s not going to change or talk down to you.

USMC is the thing from the Gomer Pyle title right?

I’ve heard of CENTCOM, but would it kill someone to say Central Command once in awhile.  Half of the letters are there already.  I think I would probably type it out as CentCom or CentComm as it is not an actual acronym.

The longest acronym in use today may be adcomsubordcomphibspac, a navy term which stands for Administrative Command, Amphibious Forces, Pacific Fleet Subordinate Command, but that’s not a proper acronym either.

Apparently LGBTQQIP2SAA is in common use — somewhere — for “lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, queer, intersex, pansexual, two-spirit, androgynous, and asexual.”

I just learned that CAPTCHA means — apparently — “completely automated public Turing test to tell computers and humans apart.”

“The world’s longest acronym, according to The Guinness Book of World Records is NIIOMTPLABOPARMBETZHELBETRABSBOMONIMONKONOTDTEKHSTROMONT (Russian: Нииомтплабопармбетжелбетрабсбомонимонконотдтехстромонт). It is 56 letters long (54 in Cyrillic). It is from the Concise Dictionary of Soviet Terminology and means “the Laboratory for Shuttering, Reinforcement, Concrete and Ferroconcrete Operations for Composite-monolithic and Monolithic Constructions of the Department of Technology of Building Assembly Operations of the Scientific Research Institute of the Organization for Building Mechanization and Technical Aid of the Academy of Building and Architecture of the USSR.”

Maybe Putin would prefer to invade Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll, Isle of Anglesey, Gwynedd, Wales, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

I have a reply to that but mama taught me to respect my elders. (For you youngsters out there, this references a television show that went off the air 53 years ago.)

I’m sure having a son in the Corps has me comfortable with the lingo. I speak conversational Marine, and thanks to my wife I have passing knowledge of hardware retail, too.

I like the fact that Rep. Gallagher does not speak down to his audience. When he pauses, you know it’s because he is checking himself not to let slip classified information, not because he’s thinking how to dumb things down.

So Germany is surrendering to Russia because of energy.  That started when Merkel shut down all the nuclear.  She was East German.  Maybe East Germany has taken over West Germany, much like how our engagement with China turned the DNC into the CCP.

Gary, in the long run and in the big picture I am sympathetic to your viewpoint. The problem is you can’t go left in any way to go right in the way you are doing it. You have to go right and then negotiate to the idealistic point. There are a whole bunch of reasons for this. It comes down to the fact that the GOP was not serious about what they were in the 90s. Societal structures move everything left and they didn’t do anything about it.

I normally only listen to speeches when I’m doing some thing else. I use Bluetooth off of my computer or an iPod. There is a way to convert YouTube’s in to podcasts for portable use, but it’s been along time since I’ve done it. I haven’t figured out how to use my cell phone for straight YouTube.

Reminder: Germany is in this fix because, after the Fukushima disaster in Japan, it was gripped by collective insanity — the Germans have a tendency that way — and shut down their nuclear power plants.

Because wind and solar are so unreliable, this has left Germany dependent on fossil fuel. Which it doesn’t have.

When California had its black-outs, they refused to build “dirty” coal fired plants to generate energy.  Arizona was not so “pure,” and coal fired plants were built near the California border.  By analogy, France has a huge number of nuclear powered plants.  I suggest that France get connected to Germany.  This could apply to Poland also.

USMC is the thing from the Gomer Pyle title right?

Your argument against too many acronyms is well taken, but there are some acronyms that everyone knows.  TV and television is one example, and another is LOL for laugh out loud.

    Another is USMC.

Every trade and profession has its catchphrases and acronyms, and some of them get well known outside of the trade or profession they originated from.

But I thought I’d mention the television program, Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C., which really was an embarrassment to the Marine Corps.  Inside and outside the Marine Corps, and even the other services, being a “Gomer” was a pejorative, and the term maybe survives to this day.

The character, played by Jim Nabors, was realistic, in the sense that there are Marines and other servicemembers who are guileless and innocent, but also hard working and contribute greatly to the service they are a member of.

But still, Pyle never really shows the main character training hard to kill.  And worse, Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. was aired smack dab in the middle of the Vietnam War, and it never gets mentioned.  It’s realistic to suppose that there were Marines back then who were never sent overseas during their first enlistment — even during Vietnam.  But there’s no mention during that program of fallen comrades that were.

So yeah, Gomer Pyle was a dishonest representation of the Marines.

So I thought I’d mention a habit Peter Robinson has that does annoy me.

Peter is the nicest, sweetest man in podcasting, and it comes across in spades.  And other than that he doesn’t accept compliments well, he would still consider that a compliment.

His questioning of Mike Gallagher was well done, and I generally enjoy his interviews both on Ricochet and Uncommon Knowledge.

    But…

He sucks up too much.  Way too much.

Some of my favorite interviewers strive, whether in politics or out, to make their subjects look good.  Two that come to mind are Brian Lamb and Johnny Carson.

And part of their genius was that you never saw that that is what they were doing.  I only realized it when it was pointed out to me.

It’s what annoys me about Peter, Jay Nordlinger and the now disgraced Charlie Rose, to provide some examples.  Since these people have their fans who actually like that sort of thing, I may be in the minority.

But I’d ask that Peter tone it down.
