Sen. Martha McSally, R-Ariz., was the first female Air Force pilot to fly in combat and to command a fighter squadron. McSally joins “Problematic Women” to share her story of “feistiness” and what drove her to literally do what no American woman before her had ever done.

In her new book, “Dare to Fly: Simple Lessons in Never Giving Up,” McSally shares her own story and how we can all move past our fears to accomplish what is said to be impossible.

Also on today’s show, we give a quick breakdown of the media’s coverage of new COVID-19 cases. And we discuss the Supreme Court’s latest abortion ruling, which poses a critical health risk to women. And as always, we’ll be crowning our Problematic Woman of the Week.

And don’t forget to tweet why you are proud to be an American using the #ProudAmerican and #ProblematicWomen.

Enjoy the show!

A bit of a joke, as Martha McSally is cowering from the Republican primary voters of her state. She lacks the wisdom or political courage to engage with her primary opponent to actively seek the support of Arizona Republican and Independent voters.

A bit of a joke, as Martha McSally is cowering from the Republican primary voters of her state. She lacks the wisdom or political courage to engage with her primary opponent to actively seek the support of Arizona Republican and Independent voters.

She joined this podcast after her Senate office got my e-mail pointing out her campaign’s failure to actually engage with and respect Arizona Republican and independent voters, whose votes she must somehow win if she is really seeking to win state-wide office for the first time. As I wrote to her in June:

You have a great personal story to tell, but the small piece of it that you were advised to hammer on, female A-10 pilot flying in combat, was not enough last time and is obviously not enough against an astronaut. The basic problem is linking this narrative to what you will do in the Senate and why people who are not entirely committed to voting their party line should think and feel favorably about you. You have a much more relevant and relatable story in your long fight for the Constitution and for basic human decency by the Pentagon leadership towards servicewomen.

In order to translate your admirable record and its meaning in today’s Senate and in Arizona, you must be seen and heard in Arizona. Ignore the Kelli Ward led Arizona GOP’s desire to avoid controversy. You actually have a primary challenger, Daniel McCarthy. Embrace the opportunity to get in front of Arizona voters, especially those who are new or skeptical about the two major parties. If he is a weak candidate, having two or three debates is a chance to show you are not a creature of the dysfunctional state party establishment while getting your points across. Feedback from the public commenting on primary debates will give you more information to help you properly adjust your communications and campaigning.
