Years ago I had an experiece similar to Stephen’s. I was starting across Broadway in Seattle at the corner with a Walk signal. A young driver was going to make a “free right turn.” The law requires that you come to a complete stop before making a right turn against a red light. He didn’t. I caught a flash of the oncoming car in the peripheral vision of my left eye. I turned in time to face the car which was moving at about 10 MPH. I put my hand on the right side of his hood and pushed off backwards. The momentum spun me like a top, but away from the car and back towards the sidewalk. The shocked driver stopped immediately and got out of his car to be sure I was all right. I was fine. In fact, I was better than fine. I have the biggest dose of adrenaline I’d had in a long time. Having always maintained a high degree of physical fitness, even in my mid-forties I suffered no injury, and the adrenaline was with me for several minutes afterwards. I have always been a bit of an adrenaline junkie, so the incident was actually pretty thrilling, sort of like Churchill’s being shot at without result.
As crazy as this week has been, do you honestly think that by the year’s end any of these events will get more than a mention in the annual news wrap up?

Apparently the United States ranks #3 for the best drivers behind the Netherlands and Latvia but #3 for the world’s worst drunk drivers behind South Africa and Canada. According to one survey I saw, the top 10 worst driving countries are all from Latin America except for Romania. Other surveys mentions most Third World countries along with Russia and Italy which has fast cars and mountainous and narrow roads…
The United States probably has good drivers for three reasons:

Stephen’s assumptions about New Yorkers and the right of way is entirely opposite of what I try to practice, out here, deep in the hinterlands of Charlotte, NC. It’s more of a set of guidelines than actual rules, but:
Glad he didn’t get clipped. Hilarious to know that people chased after the driver, thinking it was a hit and run. It’s the right but dangerous thing to do.
The smart thing to do is to feign concern over Stephen’s health, while he’s disoriented on the ground, and go for his wallet.

So Stephen was being kind of generous to himself on his walk-back of his comments about the Covington kids. The truth is, he joined with everyone else in assuming they were to blame for the confrontation, and made the same kind of snap judgement. And saying they are still “stupid teenagers” is being unfair. (And he bizarrely calls himself a stupid teenager, as if that makes his original comment better, since he implies that he is just like them, somehow). As much as he rails against the media every podcast for doing exactly what he did when he initially tweeted about this incident, I would expect he would be a bit more introspective about his reaction to what happened.
I would assume that eating more fish would have been recommenced for people with high cholesterol?
Where in the world is it ok to turn left on red? I see this like 2 or 3 times a week – I’ve even had people honk at me, because I stopped at the red light, rather than continue the left turn. … Its been going on here now for like 5 or 6 years…
I don’t know. When did it become accepted practice for the car turning left at a four way stop to have right of way over the opposite car that is proceeding straight through the intersection? The way I learned it in drivers ed, vehicles proceeding in a straight line always have right of way over vehicles that are turning.
True, 4 way stops are tragic in Canada, because so often the driver with the right-away will try being polite, and give up the right-way. Which causes an accident when he actually does go, out of turn. Another thing that’s making a come back from city planners are traffic circles. Drivers just have no clue what the hell to do in traffic circle. Including me I used to plan my route to avoid them – but Ive slowly gotten used to them – and I have only been nearly killed 3 or 4 times at one.
We have one intersection just outside of Battle Creek MI where it’s allowed. It’s at an intersection where you have to turn right to go left. Where you do the U turn to go left it’s allowed to go on red. There is a sign saying it’s OK.
