The Long “Game”

This week, don’t talk to Rob Long about the final episode of Game of Thrones. Seriously, don’t do it. Also, Jonah reviews the Universal Studios theme park, GLoP’s definitive 5 best movie comedies, the banning of Gone With The Wind, the trouble with Breakfast atTiffany’s and Birth of A Nation, and more general end-of-the-summer observations and hilarity.

Did Jonah actually admit to making a ‘living wage’ at 1:03? I guess we have to call of egging Lowry’s house.

Like so many of us, @jonahgoldberg may be the “minority partner” in his nuptial arrangement.  That only means that we were smart and married up!

Best part of the podcast was the fact that the Big Bus (1976) got some recognition from John for the greatness of the bus driver bar scene and the “one lousy foot” line.

Not only did I love the sheer absurdity of that movie but my girlfriend at the time was so horrified than I liked it we broke up soon after.  Found my current girlfriend shortly thereafter and she has a vastly better sense of humor.

Re:  Ma Bell cornering the Bakelite market.  Citation needed.  You’re asking us to believe about 30 years of knobs for electrical, electronic, optical, and mechanical devices and some once reasonably priced now very expensive jewelry existed at the sufferance of AT&T.  And Westinghouse had the trademark on the name?  I duntthinkso.

I don’t understand the fixation on Animal House, which is frequently mentioned here. People actually think that is funnier than Some Like It Hot?

Who chose the music for today’s episode? Don’t Look Back in Anger is a beautiful song and Oasis is an under appreciated band.

The 20th anniversary of “Be Here Now” just happened. That’s incredibly difficult for me to believe.

I thought it odd to say “under appreciated”  because they were all the critical rage in the second half of the 90s, and i think overrated. Clearly one of the most talked about bands of that era. My favorite is “Hey Now”.

Looks like we will be doing a Rob-less Thrones GLoP with a special guest host. Look for it next week.

I’ve got the feeling that the most rabid fans of GoT just didn’t play enough Dungeons and Dragons when they were younger.

If JPod hadn’t stepped all over my rant…

I propose that Jonah write a column after every GloP that starts with this phrase. I love JPod, but he interrupts Jonah at least once an episode and then Jonah rarely comes back and finishes what he was saying.

So there was a Dukes of Hazzard movie released in 2005. Was there any controversy about it then?

I grew up in SC in the 80s and 90s and never encountered racism. My high school was almost 50% black. Growing up with my generation watching the Dukes of Hazzard, I never thought of the confederate flag as racist. More like southern pride. Granted, I didn’t fly a confederate flag, and I never asked my black friends how they felt about it. But I grew up thinking the world of segregation and racism was in the distant past, and that mine was a generation able to value people for who they were, and not just see skin color. Things seem much worse today. Obama seems to have opened up old wounds, and Trump doesn’t seem to be the one to help heal them.

Sometimes I’ve seen writers I generally agree with condemn the south and all of her history and heroes. I think everyone I knew growing up would’ve agreed that slavery was abhorrent and rightly ended. But there were heroic southern men who fought primarily to protect their homes and states, and I don’t believe all of them were motivated by racism and oppression, just as there were northerners who weren’t fighting only to free the slaves.

Both ‘critical theory’ and Alinsky tactics involve making sure people are at each other’s throats even if you have to go back centuries to do it and then , in their own words  ‘rub raw the discontent’ . That’s why statues that were no problem for a century are now suddenly an issue out of nowhere.

I don’t remember the whole movie, but as a kid I remember laughing a long time at this:

Ditto, Katy.  I grew up in Tennessee in the ’80s.  Same thing, and we had the Battle Flag as our school logo.  No racial tensions, and I saw no prejudices expressed.

Being a proud Southerner and pro-Confederate, I started off the episode grumbling and had to skip about ten minutes until they got off the Confederate war memorials and the pseudopsychological analysis of us Southerners.  Then John got onto the supposed awfulness of Gone With the Wind, of all things.

I was about to give up on the episode entirely until I read the rest of y’all’s comments here.  I love these guys, but sometimes…sheesh!  Glad I stuck with the rest.

Any serious list of great comedies should include “What About Bob?”, my favorite Bill Murray movie:

“Leo, I see salt and pepper, is there a salt substitute?”

“I’ll get it.  And don’t call me Leo.”

“But you said in your office that I could call you Leo.”

“That was in my office.  In my home, I’d like you to call me Dr. Marvin.”
