This week on the world famous GLoP podcast: A meditation on “touchy” Joe Biden, TV shows of the 70’s and 80’s (and a deep dive into the Maude theme song), and –against the strenuous objections of Rob Long– the inevitable Game of Thrones preview segment, and another edition of What Are You Watching?

Hilarious!
Thanks for the link. I’d forgotten about that one.
Laughed at the Bea Arthur bit
Turned it off during the game of thrones.
Enough of this… where’s the link to “Old Money” on YouTube?
Jonah, you said you were rewatching Hill Street Blues and saw Debra Messing. She made three appearances on NYPD Blue.
I’d love to re-watch some of the early episodes of Hill Street.
When you watch Maude’s debut on “All in the Family” the truly annoying thing was the fact that as the audience, we were supposed to be on her side, even though Carroll O’Connor’s Archie had already been established as the far more sympathetic character (as wrongheaded as Lear and the writers might have thought Archie was, they couldn’t make him a total schmuck to his wife and daughter or then the ratings would have tanked). Spinning Maude off into her own show was like giving Bela Abzug her own sitcom. It might have been one of the earliest shows that was a bi-coastal success, but it bombed in syndication.
I think he said it was on Netflix or something like that. Some kind of special group of unaired pilots or the like.
Hill Street was not a show I was interested in back then, and still am not really. I couldn’t stand NYPD Blue either, it seemed like basically The Sipowicz Show, or NYPD Sipowicz. Even when some other character died or something, it didn’t seem to be about that character or their family etc, it ended up being how that event affected Sipowicz. Feh.
Even aside from not being able to make Archie a complete jerk, as Rob and others have pointed out, Archie was actually the hero of the show. He worked – two jobs, in fact – to support himself, and Edith, and Gloria, and “Meathead” too.
Does anyone remember a fairly recent (within the past 12 months, I hope) podcast, GLoP seems most likely, where probably either Jonah or John said something like “The left claims to be the victims of the culture war or religious oppression of the right, but actually they are the aggressors. And whenever they get a little push-back, they yell “don’t you force your values on me!””
Does that “ring a bell?”
I have never seen a single episode of GOT. However, I go with #2: a woman will end up on the throne. This will be an attempt to make up for Hillary losing . . .
Don’t remember a GLoP podcast, but many have pointed out that, contra the Left’s preferred narrative, the culture wars of the last 50 years have always featured the Left as the aggressor. I’m fairly certain I’ve heard @jonahgoldberg say that somewhere (just not sure I heard it on GLoP).
Took a bit of digging, but I think it is this:

IMDb says it was on “CBS Summer Playhouse” (1988), Season 2, episode 3. Aired 28 June 1988.
Lori Loughlin was especially gorgeous in her 20s and 30s.
I remember watching Adrienne Barbeau, I mean Maude, including the abortion episode. She had her doubts, but husband Bill Macy assured her she was doing the right thing. Very rare indeed in TV land.
They didn’t even mention, re Bill Macy, that he appeared in Oh! Calcutta. There’s a video of it if you want to see him naked.
Rob’s snoring at GOT was one of the funniest things ever on this podcast! I’ve seen only one episode of it, when I was in a hotel that had HBO. All I remember is a little guy with a bad English accent and sets decorated with naked women for no apparent (plot-related) reason.
Those women need to put something on! After all, Winter Is Coming. So they keep telling us, for what, 8 years now? Thankfully I haven’t wasted a second of my life on it.
As for Maude, wasn’t it basically like All In The Family, where Maude/Edith/Gloria/Meathead were all being supported by the work of a man who is looked down on by most/all of them, and supposed to be looked down on by the audience.
Apparently the $1000 for “still listening” was already claimed, but I came up with “boater’s gust” before the end of the spot, so I’ll be happy to receive my $1000 as well.
Has anyone here seen the 2011 unaired pilot for a Wonder Woman series with Adrianne Palicki? It is awful.
Yes it was, but SHE was gorgeous!
Thanks for the earworm, guys. I keep hearing the theme song from “Maude” over and over again. It wouldn’t be so bad if I didn’t also visualize Bea Arthur while it played. Looks like I have to re-listen to the “Game of Thrones” portion of the podcast to get some sleep tonight . . .
Let’s not forget that the Game of Thrones theme song has lyrics that explain the plot.
How many YEARS does it take for them to get to Winter, anyway?
Except, Francis “Psycho” from Stripes WAS homophobic.
And Joe Biden is disqualified from being president because he’s a Democrat.
Thank you Rob, now I have to find multiple translations of 1001 Nights and see if they are all as racist as the Richard Francis Burton edition.
I found it. It’s the GLoP from June 13, 2017. (Wow, time flies!) It has a lot of good stuff, including some great silliness about English place names and elections and stuff, which is a reason why I re-listen to it occasionally. But I usually skip the earlier part so I forgot that it has the Culture War bit, starting at about 16:10.
I wanna go back and listen to that one in ’16 where they spent the whole episode talking around the campaign without mentioning Trump’s name.
I have them all, but it would take a while to figure out which one that was.
Probably around mid-’16.
Start here. :-)
