Reality Is Too Weird

The men of GLoP (that’s Jonah Goldberg, Rob Long, and John Podhoretz) return for another romp through pop culture and a bit of politics. This week, they recall the culturally ahead-of-its-time phenomenon that was “The Dating Game,” explain why SMOD 2016 wins the coveted GLoP endorsement (sorry, Cthulhu), some thoughts on Batman v. Superman, why newspaper (remember them?) humor columnists weren’t actually very  humorous, and yes, grudgingly, they comment a bit on the state of the race.

Wouldn’t it be great to see the look on the face of the bachelorette when she sees her choice (regardless?)

“#2, if I were asleep, and you were my alarm clock, how would you wake me up?”

    “I wouldn’t – I’m no ding-a-ling!”

Actually, I had a friend in college who was a contestant on the Dating Game.  He was witty and charming and generally incredibly attractive from the other side of the wall.  He was no George Clooney.  He won, and when he walked around the wall and she saw him, the look on her face was priceless.

He went on the vacation with her that was their prize.  He told us she ran off with some other guy and he hung out with the chaperone for the week.  Had a pretty good time!

Hey, can that be the show’s official tag line:  “Incredibly attractive from the other side of the wall”?

“Apparently, the only acceptable pronunciation of the state is “Nev-AD-a,” not “Nev-AH-da.”Pronouncing the state’s name incorrectly can draw ire among residents, especially if you’re a politician.”

In the hard reality of the world, looks matter, at least to 20/30-somethings in their sexual prime, men and women both. I think it was Emo Phillips that used to have this line in his routine:

When a girl tells you she likes guys that make her laugh, she means Brad Pitt telling knock-knock jokes.

When you get to be my age (would not be the youngest GLoPer), your attractiveness is in direct proportion to the thickness of your wallet (unless they got money of their own; then the physical kicks back in.)

Nope. Nope.  An abundance of funds is an attractant at all ages and regardless of where you keeps it.

The Contours thought maybe there were others, but note: it’s a question.  Unanswered question.

At the 25:25 mark, was John’s comments about Charles Krauthamer not “selling his soul” sincere or tongue in cheek?  I can’t tell if it was a joke or not.  Either way, its an intriguing statement.

Quick side note – I bought two Caspar pillows and had the same reaction when I first slept on their mattress:  Am I some kind of droolcup-sporting idiot for not buying these things years ago?

Answer:  Yes.  Love me dem pillows.

Oh, and I already use Hello Fresh.  Is there no sponsor of GLOP that I don’t already patronize?

I really should get something cool for this.  Like Jonah’s skiing shorts.  Freshly laundered, of course.

There are basically two romantic attractants for females.  1) Money; 2) Attractive Alpha male who appears to have some power compared with other males.

If “she” can’t get one of those two, she’ll settler for a good steady financial support who is also willing to be a good father.

I think that John Podhoretz expressed the wrong take on Ryan’s invocation of Jack Kemp.  Ryan is not hearkening back to the Kemp-Roth 1979 tax cuts, he is thinking the “opportunity for all” Kemp of 1996.  That Kemp was clearly sympathetic to the lower middle classes and decidedly non-elitist.
