Enjoyed John’s take on the Olympics. I think there is a difference between sports you can measure objectively and those which are judged subjectively. That’s the difference between something like downhill skiing and figure skating.
My favourite sport Biathlon is objective – how fast do you complete the course? The shooting adds an interesting random element to the event. After skiing like hell you have to calm down enough to hold the rifle steady and hit a target. Winds are variable. Miss and you get a time penalty. That has got to be hard to do.
Excellence in this sport helped Finland repel the Soviet invasion in 1939. Enough said.
I like curling because you don’t have to pay much attention to most of it. The last few shots of each end is the most interesting. Great comment about obsessive-compulsive floor sweeping.
