Matthew Continetti joins the podcast today to talk about the larger meaning of yesterday’s horrific subway shooting—and why the media are unlikely to make hay out of it because the key suspect doesn’t fulfill a liberal narrative. And then we discuss Matt’s seminal article, “Is There A Right Left?,” from the May issue of COMMENTARY. Give a listen.

Interesting discussion, I always enjoy Matt Continetti.

I think there are even more intellectual factions on the right than the four discussed today.  The reform conservatism of Ross Douthat et. al. is still hanging around, for instance.  You see elements of these pop-up among some elected officials from time to time, while the Trump activists still unfortunately dominate the politics.

The trouble with Bush-era conservatism is it produced or was at least accompanied by three massive failures:  Iraq, the financial crisis, and to a lesser extent immigration.  These are big subjects, but it inescapable these failures call into question that whole post-nineties line of thinking.  There can be an overcorrection, to be sure, but I see a paucity of writers fundamentally engaging with these realities.

It would be interesting to have a soft paleocon like Michael Brendan Dougherty on to discuss this, or somebody from the Claremont school.  Or Ross Douthat.
