Today’s podcast takes up the catastrophic error made by the Centers for Disease Control in assessing the risk from outdoor transmission of COVID, as detailed by David Leonhardt in the New York Times. Then we go into the catastrophic error made by Joe Biden on pumping unemployment money into the economy, which he tried to correct on Monday. And then into the potentially catastrophic error made by Hamas and Islamic Jihad in assuming the West would come to their aid when they’re firing hundreds of rockets at Israel. Give a listen.

I haven’t listened in a while.  I read the summary, and thought I would give it a try.  The first topic, on the CDC, was interesting, in that it was sparked by a NYT article questioning the CDC outdoor COVID transmission recommendations.  Although it pains me greatly to say it, good job NYT.  Good job by panel exploring ramifications and causes.

Great job by John on editing the underwear ad.  Thanh you.

The federal government has a program called Summer Work Travel (aka BridgeUSA) that brings in over 200,000 college students from other countries to meet seasonal labor needs in places like Myrtle Beach and Cape Cod and Door County and Branson. They are mostly not coming this year because they can’t get visas. The businesses in these places are indeed offering much higher wages this year ($15/hour, compared with $9-10/hour in 2019), but there’s nobody to hire.

Buc-ee’s is a gas station chain in Texas.  They have large stores–Texas-sized stores–where you can shop for whatever tat you might want whilst driving through.  (Think old Cracker Barrel model but with faster food to go.)  Good, clean bathrooms.  A beaver mascot for the kids.  3 weeks off paid leave?????  Why did I bother with graduate school????? I would have been better off hawking beef jerky.

I’m a news junkie and I had no idea about the Kyrgyzstan/Tajikistan war last week.

Expecting poor Americans to do so I guess would be silly.

The majority of people in the United States who live below the poverty line do not work at all.  My husband found some statistic that put that figure close to 70%.  They “make” enough from entitlements to satisfy whatever wants they have.  They are not a good source for employment.

We did the concrete work on a Buc-ee’s in Warner Robins, GA last year, and are getting ready to start one in Richmond, KY.  We’ve bid on two or three others.  Buc-ee’s is spreading out.
