Trump in Helsinki cozying up to Putin. Trump on with Tucker Carlson threatening the viability of NATO. The possibility of an American ambassador being somehow presented to Russia for questioning. These all happened after our last podcast. We try to make sense of it without crying. Give a listen.

And now he has invited Putin to Washington. Nothing good can come of this.

You all have enormously detailed and academic reasons for your arguments, but I think they fail on two basic mistakes.

I believe that your assumption that the American public has any interest in maintaining a global empire or hegemony or whatever the current term might be is mistaken. We inherited world domination after Europe fell apart in the world wars. I believe we would be happy to withdraw to our island continent and make deals with neighbors and allies.

The second mistake is that the Russia you studied in your degrees was the soviet union. Russia before the seventy year mistake was generally a friendly neighbor to the United States. If we were not applying so much predator pressure to the Russian Federation, I suspect the historical norm would return. Russian history is not stable. The transition from universal ownership to oligarchs owning everything is not something that would normally last in Russian history. If we would stop propping these guys up in an attempt to recreate the cold war you studied in school, they will all be dead soon enough.
