Michael Brendan Dougherty of National Review joins us today to discuss his controversial NR piece, “Convincing the Skeptics,” which caused a firestorm on Twitter for supposedly showing undue sympathy for those who aren’t getting the vaccines. We also talk about bad polling and the very bad Kenneth Roth of Human Rights Watch. Give a listen.

Do JPod and the crew discuss this? That those previously infected with Covid-19 have 6 times more immunity than those not infected but vaccinated.

This is one of reasons why me (turning 39 in a few days) and my father (age 69) have no desire to get the vaccine. We have had it and are more immune than the vaccinated.

I would venture to guess there are millions like my father and myself.

I think Michael Brendan Dougherty is correct that the sales pitches for vaccinations are terrible.  But we still have millions of people who are terrified of a vaccine because of a very tiny chance of a serious reaction.  We also have millions of people who are fully vaccinated who are terrified of a tiny chance of a new variant that will make them seriously ill.  We’ve become a nation of cowards, or the mathematically illiterate.

MBD’s NR contains what can legitimately termed misinformation-his piece cites an article claiming masks are dangerous to kids due to CO2 buildup that has since been retracted. A big problem is people quoting what are in fact not studies, but press releases touting studies, that haven’t been reviewed & in many cases are seriously flawed. Medicine and science by press release is a big problem. There is an enormous amount of bad studies out there and much of it comes from nations 3rd world nations-a major source of many ivermectin & HCQ studies. The bad science is driving out the good science & that certainly complicates any messaging-people hear garbage science & then discount real science when it comes along. An added problem is those who are vax resistors are also mask resistors-so they are unlikely to take any precautions. A return to mask mandates & lock downs would likely be a disaster.

For the first time, I didn’t listen today because I am sick to death of the harassment of the unvaccinated. (I am fully vaccinated).

Unfortunately unless you get an antibody test, you don’t know if you actually had Covid or immunity. I know people who “think” they had Covid because they had flu like symptoms and are now refusing the vaccine.

I also know people in their 40’s who got Covid and were unvaccinated and ended up in the hospital and took months before they (thankfully) recovered although some have lingering effects still.

I think it would be helpful to vaccine efforts if people like that would come forward and tell their stories.  It is early days but it seems that vaccinated people may be infected but suffer only very mild symptoms or none at all. That is miraculously good!

I am vaccinated and was very thankful to get the vaccine. I don’t want to be one of the people who get Covid and are seriously ill or die. There are millions who agree with me.

I now check the summary of the episode and if Covid is one of the topics, and there isn’t any other topic to outweigh it, I just skip the whole thing.

I read Michael Brendan Dougherty’s article in NRO earlier and I think it’s a very good and interesting article, so I’m going to see if he says anything worth listening to on this podcast.
