Bill talks with Joel Farkas about the media’s war with Pres. Trump and why Trump should not back off. Then he discusses the breaking news of North Korea’s successful intercontinental ballistic missile test with Gordon Chang. Finally, Seth Leibsohn and Chris Buskirk join Bill to discuss their new book American Greatness and why so many “experts” underestimated Donald Trump and got the 2016 election wrong.

I will stop this, because some people are just too arrogant to be persuaded through common sense.

Wow. Given all your other comments, and the rejoinders to them, this is amazing.

You are quite right, actually. I confess to giving in to a bit of reflexive showing off. I just cannot resist trying to show that so many of the rejoinders to my points are not completely thought through, in my judgement. There is just so much of a need nowadays to just react to others, when a little more sober reflection is in order. I guess I am part of that. I will try to do better. :-)

People like Bennett and Prager made their livings pointing out the best way to growth and happiness. Now they seem to have thrown that away. Prager’s excuse is that there is a “Civil War”. Not only will he not back down from such silliness, he won’t even debate it. He said a few times that he was gonna have Jonah on. He never has. What is he afraid of? To me, this is cowardly, and, i’m sorry, but I can’t forgive it.

Intellectual people do not look down on people who do not work with ideas. Quite to the contrary. I’ve heard the supporters of Trump putting down the people who question Trump’s behavior. Prager began his essay, weeks ago, by saying that he forgives trumps Skeptics because they have “Moral Bank Accounts”. Condescension anyone?

One of the unfortunate outcomes of the election of 2016 was the emergent hypocrisy of men I once admired, Dennis Prager among them.  Since I long ago canceled my subscription to Pragertopia, I didn’t know until just now that he hasn’t had Jonah Goldberg on his show in a while.

I can’t believe people who pride themselves on their values (Prager, Bennett, et al.) were able to talk themselves into supporting a guy as despicable as Trump, and justify that support by pointing to the vileness of his opposition.

“Stealing is bad,” we said.  “Don’t steal!  Only bad people steal!”

“Hey, folks,” said another voice.   “I’m the local employer!  And I’m giving out good jobs to good thieves!!”

“And I’m the local banker,” said still another voice.  “And  I’m giving out good LOANS to good thieves!”

“Really?” we said.  “Hmmm.  Well, everyone else seems to be stealing, and being rewarded for their trouble.  So what the heck, maybe we should steal too!”

And merrily down the rabbit hole we go.

That’s an honorable position.  You may consider mine either ignoble, or hypocritical.  Here’s mine:

Abdoul Amid ibn Shittady al Jihadi has a knife to my kid’s throat.

“Renounce your Christianity, or the child dies.”  Renounced.

“Convert to Islam, or the child dies.”  لا آلة إلا الله، ومحمد هو ربح الله.

“Declare your Constitution a platform for discrimination, oppression, misogyny, homophobia (yeah, I know, but still), and the exploitation of the poor.” Declared.

I’ll do whatever I have to do to save my child and hopefully get the chance to help ibn Shittady al Jihadi achieve room temperature.  I’ll say whatever I have to say.  I just need that one shot.

Trump may not be the weapon I’d’ve chosen, lo those many moons ago.  But he’s the weapon I’ve got, and I’m more than good with that. At least with Trump there might be a whisper of a fraction of a chance of a lottery ticket that my kids’ll inherit a Constitutional Republic.  I might have to get down in the mud and the blood to see that happen.  Okay.

Does that make me a hypocrite?
