‘Caddyshack’ Nation: America is Bushwood Country Club

After Trump’s 2016 victory, I considered forming a new political action group called the Al Czervik Republicans. It would be based on Rodney Dangerfield’s classic character in the 1980 comedy film Caddyshack and serve as a tribute to those considered the “wrong kind” of people by the establishment in Washington DC.

If you’ve never watched Caddyshack before, you might want to do so before reading the rest of this. Spoilers will follow.

In many ways, Trump is a perfect metaphor for Dangerfield’s Al Czervik. They’re both self-made businessmen and builders. They’re sometimes crass, often hilarious, and completely despised by the “right kind” of people. They both delight in pointing out the hypocrisy of the privileged class and are targeted for retribution as a result.

Ted Knight’s uptight, snobbish character Judge Smails is the establishment. The Democrats, and some Republicans, bent on keeping the riff-raff out of the country club that is our nation’s capital. The judge’s first name is Elihu, an obvious reference to Elihu Yale, the founder of Yale University who, like many Democrats, was involved in the despicable industry of slavery.

In one scene, Judge Smails tries to choke Al Czervik for criticizing the country club. When others come rushing in to stop the altercation, Smails claims that it was Czervik who tried to choke him and then tells Czervik that he will never be a member of the club. The judge’s projection, the fact that he accuses his opponent of what he just did is exactly the type of projection we’ve seen from Democrats and the DC swamp since 2016.

The media is Spaulding Smails, the spoiled, useless, nose-picking doofus who enjoys a life of ease based solely on the fact that he is the grandson of the judge. Much like Spaulding, the media stays in the establishment’s corner, even when they’re told they’ll get nothing and like it. See the media coverage of the Joe Biden 2020 campaign for repeated examples.

Bill Murray’s character Carl Spackler is the American low-information voter. As an assistant groundskeeper, he is a deplorable but doesn’t know it. He sometimes causes chaos due to his lack of knowledge but does so with the best of intentions. He is looked down on by the establishment but he has a job, so he has that going for him. He would be happy swimming in a pond or a pool, and even though he likes candy bars, the elites think he prefers to eat something else.

Lacey Underall is a perfect symbol for clueless liberal Hollywood activists. Lacey doesn’t agree with or even care what her uncle Judge Smails believes in, she just likes the lifestyle that comes with it. Ty Webb is the quirky, rich golf guru who seduces her. It’s a perfect role for SNL veteran Chevy Chase, a longtime Democrat activist.

The Deplorables are the caddies, the wait staff, and the grounds crew. They’re the working-class people who keep things running for the enjoyment of the establishment. The only reason they’re allowed access to Bushwood Country Club is for the convenience of their social betters. They’re allowed in the pool one day a year but the elites think it has to be sterilized afterward.

One of the caddies is Danny Noonan, a working-class kid who aspires to do better than his parents. At first, he tries to play the establishment’s game by kissing up to Judge Smails, who repeatedly treats him like a lesser person. In the end, it is Al Czervik who comes through for him by promising to make it worth his while if he helps Czervik’s team in a high-stakes game of golf.

Al Czervik delivers for the deplorable caddy, not the stuck-up Judge Smails, who repeatedly dangles success in Danny’s face if he will just accept his place. Does that sound familiar?

Even the movie’s theme song has an inherently libertarian message. The refrain of “I’m Alright” by Kenny Loggins is “I’m alright. Nobody worry ‘bout me. You got to gimme a fight. Why don’t you just let me be?”

That last point is something the establishment never seems to understand. Why can’t you just let me be? The Deplorables don’t seek to impose their will on others. Their goal is to be left alone and live their lives in peace.

No matter the ultimate outcome of the 2020 election, this isn’t going to change. If Democrats and the media get their wish and Joe Biden is sworn in as president in January, the Deplorables are not going away.

The country club can’t run properly without the people who are willing to do the real work. You would think our ruling class would remember that once in a while.

Yup; I just want to be left alone. But they won’t leave me alone.

Brilliant! Caddyshack perfectly illustrates our present political situation. Must pop in the DVD for a rewatch tonight, but now cannot help but see all of the characters as they are described in this piece.

Yeah, that’s one of the problems with the Deplorables, in my view.

I generally like them, and may well be one of them.  I think that the breakdown of social norms is part of their understandable dissatisfaction, but the libertarian impulse prevents any solution.

I do find libertarianism to be juvenile, which probably makes me obnoxious on the issue.  It doesn’t make me wrong, however.

What do the Deplorables think about abortion, or illegitimacy, or drug addiction, or a dozen other serious problems?

I genuinely do not understand what you are driving at with this post.

For dumb people like me, could you expand on your point?

Czervik exhibits this same behavior, though.  He drops his anchor through Smails’ boat and then yells, “Hey, you scratched my anchor!”
