I Have To Do It: In Defense of Kim Kardashian

Reality star Kim Kardashian has landed herself in some hot water after taking a large friend and family trip for her 40th birthday after taking COVID precautions in order to do it safely:

Kardashian is doing what too few people are: Using the COVID moment to reassert our priorities and practice mindful gratitude.

But, hear me out, I think Kardashian is making an important point in this moment where it’s virtuous to not only stay at home, but claim to want to stay at home indefinitely. The goal, ultimately, is normalcy, and honestly, good for her for making that clear and making it happen.

Without watching their television show (and I never will), I had always dismissed the family as idiots. I will never watch the show, but Kim K.’s work on prison reform has been admirable and I no longer free to joke about her or her family being stupid.

    Bethany,

The times we are living through just get weirder and weirder. Who would have predicted that Kim Kardashian and her husband Kanye West would turn out to be voices of reason!? As a myriad of personalities from Hollywood, the News Media, and Academia prove that they are basically paranoid psychotics that project their fear-laden fantasies out onto anyone who doesn’t follow the “narrative” down to the letter, why would this rather bizarrely unlikely couple actually be making sense?

    Go figure.

    Regards,

    Jim

For a long time I wasn’t sure if Kardashian was a real thing or a meme, but this suggests a real person.

I miss the old days when Jay Gatsby threw a party and didn’t send 200,000 telegrams to strangers to tell them about it.

No, he just had a book and several movies made about them to provide vicarious entertainment. The Kardashians wish they had that kind of exposure.

I was on travel once.  While flipping through the channels, I landed on Keeping Up With the Kardashians.  I decide to see what all the talk was about.  My conclusions were:

    1) They are not idiots.  They were making damn good money on a reality TV show with no redeeming qualities.

    2) They are boring as hell.  Maybe I don’t see the fascination because I’m a guy, but I enjoy listening to The LadyBrains and Mock & Daisy podcasts.  They are smart, funny, and very entertaining.  The conversations on KUWTK nearly put me to sleep . . .

One other thing about Kim.  So far, she has refused demands to condemn Trump.  Instead, she’s remaining silent, which to me is a big plus.

Strange times indeed. Who would have looked at the West/Swift awards kerfuffle and predict that later one would put out a Christian album and support a Republican President and the other would support abortion and the Democrat Presidential candidate and get the spots right?

I saw jokes about the “after 2 weeks” line with pictures of Gilligan’s Island and other doomed locations. I didn’t know where it was coming from. After learning the back story, I think it’s okay and if you can afford it do it.

Sound conservative principle to not begrudge what other people do with their own money.

I just want to throttle anyone who uses the phrase “new normal” … no there is no new normals. We should do everything possible to get the political establishment back into the old normal as quickly as possible. The economic and personal damage done by the political response to covid-1984 has been far more damaging than the actual disease. Politicians should think that once they declare a new normal, they’ve surrendered, have completely failed. Honorable resignation is acceptable (Though I would prefer they hari kari).

On Sept 12 2001 a new normal was declared, and now 20 years later airport security is ridiculously expensive (but not necessarily any better than it was before) entire new bureaucracies of deep state secret policemen have been created. Not to mention the launching of new over seas wars. The mistake was made in 2001. We accepted a new normal – of being groped, x-rayed, photographed – just for the ‘privilege’ of flying. Their should have been sunset clauses on all these measures. DHS, TSA can all go away. What do you think next year or in 20 years, we’ll be nostalgic for the old normal?

Kim Kardashian has been an aspirational leader – many young men and women aspire to live her lifestyle, maybe she can bring them back to aspire for the old normal once again.
